Great Despite A Million Typos and Weird Prefaces
By Big Apple
Despite the very sloppy presentation - typos galore and unreadable front matter - this is a brilliantly written addiction memoir by an author up there with some of the best post-Burroughs narco-chroniclers like Irvine Welsh, Brett Easton Ellis, et al. I truly believe the book would be selling better were it not for the nonsensical introduction by James Frey presented in a poorly formatted font and then all the gibberish that follows before the novel actually begins - anyone downloading a sample will barely be able to get to the good stuff. And it is good. This guy can really write. It's not quite as serious as a 'Prozac Nation' but more in the tongue-in-cheek style of a 'Trainspotting' or even 'American Psycho' - which isn't junk lit, but is about excess, drugs and written with similar aplomb, presenting the grotesque with sharp gallows humor. For those who like an entertaining, well-written read about doing hard drugs that could only be written by someone who has done at least some of what he writes about, this book is highly recommended. For me it hit three sub-genres I love - junk memoir, LA memoir, Brit in LA story. It's a bit short but it's good to leave the reader wanting more I suppose. Now if someone could just fix those typos...

Much Better
By VirgilCane
I accidentally got another book by Tony O. after not giving the first piece a very good rating. I'm glad I didn't realize for a bit who I was reading or I wouldn't have finished. He definitely should have stopped after this prequel was written. This book was much better than the sequel I read first. I used to think it was self-serving ego that led folks to keep writing about themselves. Now I think it might just be simple old economics and fellas needing the cash to feed that jones!

A smooth ride
By calmly
Tony achieves the impossible: he writes smoothly about the most harrowing amounts of drug ingestion I've ever encountered. It's like watching "Leave it to Beaver" except the family is all shooting themselves up and each other up and yet it has all that tidiness of a 50's American television show. It is just because Tony has such a good command of the language. He obviously had a lot of trouble controlling his drug usage, it almost killed him.

So what does a fine writer like Tony do after writing this book? I mean, is there a market for a book that isn't about ingesting lots of drugs?

I want Tony to do well because his writing is just, well so pleasant. And that is despite the first chapter of this book having more drugs ingested than I've known of being ingested anywhere else in my entire life. Fortunately for me the pace of drug usage slowed down in subsequent chapters or I would have overdosed from the reading.

Tony is a founding member of the Riot Lit Collective, a small group of writers who have banded together on the Internet. Keep an eye on them.
