Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge: Ethnobotany and Ecological Wisdom of Indigenous Peoples of Northwestern North America, by Nancy J.

Volume 1: The History and Practice of Indigenous Plant Knowledge Volume 2: The Place and Meaning of Plants in Indigenous Cultures and Worldviews Nancy Turner has studied Indigenous peoples' knowledge of plants and environments in northwestern North America for over forty years. In Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge, she integrates her research into a two-volume ethnobotanical tour-de-force. Drawing on information shared by Indigenous botanical experts and collaborators, the ethnographic and historical record, and from linguistics, palaeobotany, archaeology, phytogeography, and other fields, Turner weaves together a complex understanding of the traditions of use and management of plant resources in this vast region. She follows Indigenous inhabitants over time and through space, showing how they actively participated in their environments, managed and cultivated valued plant resources, and maintained key habitats that supported their dynamic cultures for thousands of years, as well as how knowledge was passed on from generation to generation and from one community to another. To understand the values and perspectives that have guided Indigenous ethnobotanical knowledge and practices, Turner looks beyond the details of individual plant species and their uses to determine the overall patterns and processes of their development, application, and adaptation. Volume 1 presents a historical overview of ethnobotanical knowledge in the region before and after European contact. The ways in which Indigenous peoples used and interacted with plants - for nutrition, technologies, and medicine - are examined. Drawing connections between similarities across languages, Turner compares the names of over 250 plant species in more than fifty Indigenous languages and dialects to demonstrate the prominence of certain plants in various cultures and the sharing of goods and ideas between peoples. She also examines the effects that introduced species and colonialism had on the region's Indigenous peoples and their ecologies. Volume 2 provides a sweeping account of how Indigenous organizational systems developed to facilitate the harvesting, use, and cultivation of plants, to establish economic connections across linguistic and cultural borders, and to preserve and manage resources and habitats. Turner describes the worldviews and philosophies that emerged from the interactions between peoples and plants, and how these understandings are expressed through cultures’ stories and narratives. Finally, she explores the ways in which botanical and ecological knowledge can be and are being maintained as living, adaptive systems that promote healthy cultures, environments, and indigenous plant populations. Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge both challenges and contributes to existing knowledge of Indigenous peoples' land stewardship while preserving information that might otherwise have been lost. Providing new and captivating insights into the anthropogenic systems of northwestern North America, it will stand as an authoritative reference work and contribute to a fuller understanding of the interactions between cultures and ecological systems.

Review
"This magisterial work - exploring the deep, abiding, and ever-evolving relationships between plants and indigenous peoples - is monumental in its scope and depth. It is authoritative, accessible, full of wonderful anecdotes and stories, and will interest scholars of North American anthropology, geography, botany, and ecology, as well as general readers." Thomas F. Thornton, Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford

"Nancy Turner’s books are vital repositories of botanical and cultural lore, but more essentially they are road maps to wonder. Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge is clearly her opus, the culmination of more than five decades of research and insight. I

"Written from a deep love and respect for both people and plants, and an obvious desire for global human cooperation in the face of environmental planetary peril, Turner’s message, through over 1000 pages, is simple: “We have to find ways to look after ea

Magistral review of plant use
By E. N. Anderson
This two-volume, 1161-page encyclopedic work summarizes the life work of Nancy Turner, the leading authority on plant use among Indigenous people of western Canada. She has worked with hundreds of Indigenous people, over almost five decades, to record every detail of plant use (and fungus, lichen, and related organism use) and traditional management. Suffice it to say that the acknowledgements comprise eight pages of fine print, and most of the people named are Indigenous authorities and co-workers. Dr. Turner has been coauthoring books with Indigenous authorities for decades, and her ready ability to cooperate and work with people shows up in the present work.
There is really nothing remotely comparable to this book in the literature on Indigenous peoples; the only really comparable oeuvre is Hu Shiu-ying's work on Chinese ethnobotany. Some European countries, and parts of Mexico, have equivalent coverage, but only through the work of hundreds of scholars. Nancy Turner is a one-woman knowledge industry who literally writes faster than most people read; this is only the latest in a huge series of works, most of them covering the plant use of particular First Nations.
Most of this encyclopedic reference deals with actual uses of plants, as food, for technology, and for healing, but there is also full detail on how they were traditionally managed, how children were taught about them, how the cultures represented them in stories, and similar questions. A major finding of Dr. Turner and her coworkers has been the extent of plant management by the Northwest Coast peoples; they are usually described as hunter-gatherers in the literature, but their plant management was (and locally still is) much more like farming. They were intensive managers, cultivators, and often sowers or transplanters, and some plants show the effects of cultivation over millennia. The famous "anomaly" of Northwest Coast cultural complexity--comparable as it is to that of advanced agricultural societies--stands explained: they, to all intents and purposes, WERE advanced plant managers. In fact, they managed most of the Northwest far better than it is being managed now, and we can and should learn a great deal from them.
This great work will remain a landmark in human-ecological studies.

Ethnobotany at it's finest!
By Frodi Ingsson
This is one of those books we dream about being written. By far Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge is the most accessible and in-depth study of Northwestern Ethnobotany around. The author does a superb job of introducing the subject matter, the different ways information was attained, and the different facets to be considered in each area of study.

I love the way Turner weaves scientific information with traditional knowledge. I feel she honors both traditions without compromising either of them.

Even though this is considered an academic book, it felt more like a story. For instance, in chapter two the author tells us the story of how and where the natives arrived from by accessing data on glacial melting, sea level, archeology, and genetics. While giving us this date she weaves in many interesting Native stories to compliment and humanize the migrations.

As for the book itself, there are so many valuable insights and information to be gleaned, I cannot but begin to emphasis how awesome of a job the author did. For instance, on page 75 the author discusses different ways natives might have learned about selective harvesting, storage, pruning, and medicinal uses of plants by watching animals. Another story she tells is how the Natives would purposely leave piles of Cattail material behind to help and honor the squirrels who would weave together shelters from these pieces in nearby Fir trees.

I love how the author addresses the different fields of study necessary in order for us to arrive at a decent understanding of what is being talked about. For example, on page 134 she talks about what different areas of study are needed to truly understand the significance and meaning of plant names. She tells us we need a decent understanding of linguistics, particularly with familiarity of many different languages. We also need a deep understanding of botanical and ecological knowledge as well as historical, archeological, social, and economic relations. All these factors are needed in order for us to gain a proper understanding of a plant name. She does this countless times throughout her book. Anytime she moves to a different subtopic, she lays out what is needed to gain an understanding, and then, like any good academic, she delivers.

As for the second book in the series, while it was not as exciting to me as the first, there was still a lot of valuable information on storytelling and ritualistic uses of plants that was enlightening to say the least.

I can go on and on about how indispensable Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge is to anyone studying Ethnobotany or plants in general, but I will just finish with this: if I could give Turner’s book Ten Stars, I would.

Theory and Practice of Contemporary PharmaceuticsFrom CRC Press

With a shift toward problem-based learning and critical thinking in many health science fields, professional pharmacy training faces a shift in focus as well. Although the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has recently suggested guidelines for problem solving to be better integrated into pharmacy curriculum, pharmacy books currently available either address this material inadequately or lack it completely. Theory and Practice of Contemporary Pharmaceutics addresses this problem by challenging pharmacy students to think critically in preparation for situations that arise in clinical practice.

This book offers a wealth of up-to-date information, organized in a logical sequence, corresponding to the art and science required for formulators in industry and dispensing pharmacists in the community. It breaks down the subject to its simplest form and includes numerous examples, case studies, and problems. In addition to presenting basic scientific principles, each chapter includes a self-evaluation tutorial designed to help you evaluate your understanding of the subject matter, numerical problems that provide practice in finding mathematical solutions, and case studies that measure your overall grasp of the subject matter by challenging you to craft a plausible solution to a real-life scenario using the concepts presented in that chapter.

Written by authors selected from academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, the book presents an objective and balanced view of pharmaceutical science and its application. The authors' insights are extremely helpful to pharmacy students as well as practicing pharmacists involved in the development and/or dispensation of existing and new generation biotechnology-based drug products. This simplified and user-friendly book will present pharmaceutics in a way that it has never been presented before and will help prepare students and pharmacists for the competitive and challenging nature of the professional market.

2 stars because I found the premise good. The characters seemed childish to me
By Lina
I had such high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, I stopped feeling excited after the first 10% of this book. Not my cup of tea. Rating it 2.5 stars because I found the premise good. The characters seemed childish to me, the cheating turned me off (even if it was for the sake of the heroine)and I couldn't connect to the heroes...Also, the editing is not good. Seems rushed and full of typos. A pity because I enjoyed the author's previous work...

HOLD ON TO YOUR PANTIES!!!!
By Book Happiness
I received this for an honest review.. I have to say that this was a FANTASTIC read. This book is a wild freaking ride. One that you just don't want to end. This book has it all.. Angst, sexy sexy hotness, jealousy.. I knew the minute I picked this book up I would not want it to end.

Neveah and Landon were high school sweethearts and Neveah breaks up with Landon because she has so much on her plate and doesn't want to drag him down. a couple years later they meet up in the most unconventional way.
This book was a roller coaster you just do not want to get off...

Sorry guys there is so much I want to tell you about this book but I don't like spoilers. Just know this is one book you do not want to pass up!!!!!

WOW!!! A DEFINITE ONE CLICK FOR THIS STORY .... YOU WONT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN
By Sonia Chapple
OMG.....S R Watson MORE than delivers with The Object of His Desire!
Having never read anything of hers before I wasn't sure what to expect but WOW can this woman write!!!
From the first chapter I couldn't put it down.....not because I needed to know what happened next but because I HAD TO KNOW what happened next. That, for me, is exactly what a truly gifted writer can do....draw me in and have me so hooked into the storyline and totally invested in the characters that I HAVE to continue reading. I totally fell in love with this storyline, it's characters and of course the gifted writer herself!
This story is one that starts with tragedy, secrets and lies. Nevaeh's decision to take care of her mum during her battle with cancer, by any means necessary, has also meant she had to let go of the one boy she's ever truly loved. Landon was the boy she hurt deeply with her lies.
Skip forward two years and her decision to make a fresh start brings her face to face with the boy she hurt deeply. He has moved on with his life and new girlfriend Giselle. Circumstances thrust her back into his life unexpectedly. Do they pretend not to know each other or do they forget about their past and move forward?
A definite 5 stars and a MUST one click for this story!!!!

Changed My View on Running
By Brooke Lorren
For most of my life, I have HATED running. With a passion. It isn't like I didn't have any experience with it either: in school, I played soccer; I stopped playing soccer in high school, when the running requirements were upped. After I left high school, I spent 10 years in the Navy. Although I ran because I had to, it was always something I dreaded, and something to do because I had to. This book has changed the way that I feel about running.

My biggest problem with running was always that it was too hard. I never was a natural runner; everybody was always faster than me. Running the 1.5 mile PRT in the Navy always left me out of breath, gasping for air. I realized with this book that I was going about the entire running thing all wrong.

Instead of expecting you to be able to run like the wind at the beginning of this book, it just has you going for a short time. It tells you to run for either 30 seconds or a minute (I can't remember). Over time, this book has you building up until you can run for 30 minutes straight. From there, you can increase your running if you wish, slowly. This book also doesn't focus on the speed that you run. This is perfect for slow people like me. This book also doesn't force you to progress any faster than you're comfortable.

I was able to skip past the first week, which requires that you can walk for an hour. I had been walking for at least a couple of years, but I wanted something more challenging. Once I transitioned to running, that first minute was hard. In the book, you walk between your bursts of running. I was so happy at first for those walking breaks.

I injured my foot in the first week or two of this program, and had to temporarily suspend this program. I was able to get back into it after I healed, and now I am running again. I am on week 6, which has you running for 7 minutes and walking for 3 minutes at a time as a rest. That might not seem like much to some people, but as someone who would gasp for breath running up and down the street one time, this is a major thing for me. After the seven minutes, I'm not gasping for air either like I used to be.

Even though there have been times in my life where I had to run, this is the first time in my life that I run and kinda like it. I'm not the fastest runner in the world, but I'm doing it; I'm really proud of the slow improvement that I've been seeing.

As other reviewers have said, this is not a book for advanced runners. That's not the purpose of this book. This book is for those people who wish they could run, but never thought that they could because it is too hard.

Simple, easy, motivating and REALISTIC
By Jackie-the-Greyhound
My last year was a nightmare in terms of derailed exercise and it was finally time to (again!) restart my running. I didn't like running, but every few years I would lie to myself and pretend I did. Usually at least I'm biking or swimming (in addition to muscle-y type exercise) so I'm generally in O.K. shape. However, with age kicking in, work related time crunches and overall 'meh' I realized I wasn't doing much of anything endurance related. Plus, somehow I'd gained a few pounds I haven't seen since I was preggers. Not a good combination at all. I really needed to start MOVING again. So, what else, buy a book!

This one is definitely geared to the total newbie runner, but that's what I wanted. I've done up to 10 milers in the past and I know that every time I start a 'program' I manage to hurt myself. Add age and increased weight and I knew I needed a different approach. This book certainly came through. It has a 'plan' that is not unfamiliar, but I've never tried before--it is a walk, then walk-run program that is EASY TO FOLLOW.

I've read many plans and some are incredibly convoluted and detailed...just not necessary. This one breaks 30-34 minute exercise periods into varying blocks--starting with 1 minute intervals of walking and on up until you are running 30 minutes straight in 12 phases. The phases can correspond to weeks, or you can spend more time in each phase as needed. Some of the jumps between times seem more challenging when reading about doing it, but by the time you are there, you really are ready.

Each phase corresponds to a chapter--there are nice motivational comments by people (realistic people!) who have done the program.

Also, as the title points out, one of the points of this is to lose some weight. We are not talking gimmicks here, just a bunch of sound advice regarding what goes in vs. what comes out. Even if the weight doesn't change overly much, the measurements just might. Also, there is an emphasis on calories in vs. calories out, with room for you to make your own decisions about specific meal philosophies.

One big plus, and something I've not been good about before, was the emphasis on logging. It's one of those things I knew I 'should' do and this was very motivating to do it. (I started using one of the many online versions of this) and boy did that make a difference when it came to the weight loss aspects! Even though I was mostly after the fitness, the eating modifications (and weight loss) really made a big difference.

All in all this is eminently suitable to the new runner (and YAY a book that doesn't insist you buy fancy shoes until you are at a point when you might start actually needing them). As with most exercise books, I do wish a little more time was spent on the importance of a proper bra (need one of those sooner than the fancy shoes...). Very non-technical and a program that is easy to follow. I have found my 'run' again--no injuries and I'm back up to 30 minutes of running again...and looking for more. No pain, and lo-and-behold, this time I think I really do like the running.

Highly recommended!

JTG (well the non-greyhound in the family anyway!)

Oh, and I also found a free app for my phone that I could plug the phases into and that makes the interval times even easier to follow.

This is the best step by step guide to begin your dream of becoming a runner !
By Jc
I can't say enough about this book. I have always wanted to run and this book did the trick. By the end of 12 weeks I was running for the 30 minutes it promised I would be. As of today I am able to run a full 5 miles!!!this is something I never thought I would be able to do. I must tell you I followed the program exactly as written. I worked out 4 days a week never missing a day. If you ever wanted to run this is the training book for you!

A book like this has been long overdue!
By Scott Ramsay
Turkish Vocabulary for English Speakers: 9000 Words by Andrey Taranov and T&P Books is excellent and fills a need that, to my knowledge, has never been met before for the Turkish language. I do not know of any other Turkish vocab books on the market. Prior to this, one's best approximation of a Turkish vocab book was to purchase the most minuscule Turkish/English dictionary on the market, assume the editors only "bothered" with the most common words, and then build one's word list accordingly. The other method, much more useful for a different type of language, was to jot down every "unknown" word from Cumhuriyet newspaper or another periodical, reference it in a dictionary, and then write it down on one's list of words to memorize; the problem with using this method for Turkish is that there is such a wide gulf between colloquial/spoken Turkish and Turkish as it is commonly written. If a person spoke Turkish as it is usually written, Turks would think that person crazy, or a robot, or both. (Many Turks have yet to be convinced of the wonders of writing in prose.)

Vocab books tend to fall into four categories. There are books that take the most common 200 verbs (or the most common 501 verbs) and then list all said verbs in alphabetical order from A to Z (or even from alpha to omega). Then there are books that list the most common few thousand words for a dialect of a language in numerical order, from the most frequent word at number 1 all the way down to the 5000th most frequent word or whatever. A third type of book takes the most common thousand words in a language and then lists them alongside all their derivations and inflections: e.g. "sure" grouped with words like surely, sureness, unsure, unsurely, unsureness, and so on. And finally there are theme-based books like this one; it takes 9000 common English words and groups them and their Turkish translations by category: e.g. the human being, clothing & accessories, professions and occupations, life events, fauna, flora, et cetera.

I respectfully disagree with the review previous to mine which said the book doesn't put the vocabulary in context; the fact that the words are grouped according to subject matter indicates context. The reviewer's other sentence stated that the book was boring; a lot of tools in the toolbox in my garage are boring too. Learning a language to the point of actual proficiency or fluency IS boring, no matter what some foreign language publishers would have a person believe. Mastering a foreign language takes a whole lot of discipline and toil - especially an Altaic language like Turkish with its dearth of English cognates, the myriad upon myriad of verbal derivatives that are key to grasping written Turkish, the nigh-endless suffixation of nouns and pronouns, and the "unnatural" syntax (unnatural to the average Westerner, at any rate).

The first thing I would do before plunking down twenty bucks to buy this book is ask myself why I am learning Turkish. Simply buy a phrase book or a twenty-chapter "teach-yourself-Turkish" type of book if you're spending less than two months in Turkey. Learning some stock phrases and how to "halfway" pronounce Turkish will garner you many smiles and much goodwill. Also if you only hang out in Aegean or Mediterranean resort land; or if you only hang out in the tonier districts of the major cities - e.g. Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Adana, Antalya, Mersin, et cetera; there are endless numbers of Turks who are almost overbearing when it comes to their zeal to speak English with you. Many won't even "allow" you to speak Turkish; they just want to practice their English. On the other hand, if you're going to have Turkish in-laws, if you're going to be spending many months or more in Turkey, if you're going away from the two tourist coasts and the metropolis centers, if you envisage the sheer joy of playing backgammon with a retired Turkish laborer in an eastern Turkey teahouse while sharing pleasant and intelligent conversation and his completely different outlook on life, then you SHOULD buy Turkish Vocabulary for English Speakers: 9000 Words. Also get a basic Turkish primer or two (e.g. DK or Pollard), a decent Turkish dictionary or two (e.g. Milet or Redhouse), a decent Turkish grammar book or two (e.g. the late Geoffrey Lewis one, or else the cheaper and smaller of the two that Kerslake put out), and practice with every Turkish speaker you can find (preferably of the non-Anglophone variety).

This is the first book of the genre, so I will give it five stars on the Amazon scale even though it has a number of bugs that could be worked out yet.

AUDIO. It sounds like an audio recitation of some of the T&P vocabulary/language series is soon to be forthcoming. Kudos to them. I know of no such thing available in Turkish. While I am sure the good folks at T&P will get to Russian and Spanish before Turkish, I hope they make a Turkish one and do it "right" - as in no computer-generated voices for starters. Ideally I'd record seven men and seven women saying ALL the words in the book. Click on whichever voice suits you. Ideally these people would be a mixture - geographic within Turkey, rural to urban, and socioeconomic. A pipe dream, I know. But as a guy I could do without sounding like an operatic soprano from Taksim Square when I say "Excuse me" after bumping a guy in an Erzurum tavern. While I'm secure in my manhood and I'm not homophobic, my falsetto just isn't what it used to be.

CARBON COPY SERIES, APPARENTLY. I don't have any of the other books in the T&P Books vocabulary series, but as near as I can tell from the internet, all of the English words and all of the section titles are the same in any 9000-word edition, whether one is studying Turkish, Armenian, Chechen, Chinese, French, Swedish, or any of the other thirty languages for which they publish vocab books. I think a future book could be better tailored to the circumstances of Turkish instead of a "generalist" book, so to speak. Turkish is spoken basically just in Turkey; yes, there are small populations in the Balkans, on Cyprus, in Moldova, and throughout the Turkish diaspora, but it is basically the language of Turkey, period. As such, one could easily nix the lengthy sections on alpine skiing and hockey, for example. (Does it get just gelid in Kars in January? Yes. Did I ever see anyone skiing or body checking someone in the Land of the Al Sancak? Never.) To the best of my knowledge, about one out of every several hundred to one thousand Turkish citizens is a Christian or a Jew; the amount of Christian vocab could be greatly reduced and the Islamic vocab increased - when I enter a mosque, it's nice to know the word for what I'm looking at or what's being explained to me. For example, on page 246, "to say mass" is translated as "vaaz vermek," which literally means "to give a sermon." In all fairness to T&P Books, I cannot imagine that there is a Turkish phrase corresponding to "say mass." The liturgical languages of the Jewish and Christian services said in Turkey are not Turkish - they're the languages of the resident foreigners or of some minority (e.g. Hebrew or Ladino for the Turkish Jew, Armenian or Greek for the Istanbul Christian, et cetera). One further example: there are 140 entries for 70 nationalities in the book - one for Chilean man and one for Chilean woman, one for Vietnamese man and one for Vietnamese woman, and so on. But in Turkish there is no "separate" word for a man or a woman of the same nationality - so that makes for 70 redundant entries. To sum it up, there are at least a couple hundred words of "fat" that could be trimmed. In its stead I would put the names of common Turkish dishes (e.g. baklava, lahmacun) and other words more germane to life in Turkey. Turkish place names and common Turkish people names are often irregularly accented - even putting these in the book to reach 9000 words would be better than hockey "puck."

COUPLE TYPOS. "Nutrition" is spelled incorrectly on pages 8 and 52. I believe the accent on the "zorla" of zorla almak is on the wrong syllable. Et cetera.

MISSING INFLECTIONS. Turkish has many nouns that are inflected irregularly and a few verbs that are irregular. What good does it do to learn just the subject/nominative form, the locative form, and the ablative form of a noun? I kind of need to know how to use a noun as a direct object, an indirect object, or a possessive/genitive as well. For example, on page 43 the word for "nose" is given as "burun" by itself. But if I want to use "nose" as a direct object, an indirect object, or a possessive, I have to drop the second u in "burun" - i.e. burnu, burna, and burnun respectively. Therefore the typical Turkish dictionary gives: "burun, -rnu" instead. The letters "che," g, k, p, and t all often "transform" into a different consonant at the end of an inflected noun, and also they often do not. A second edition of this book will hopefully give a heads-up of some sort as it lists irregular vocabulary (even if it's just an asterisk by the irregular word so I know to look it and its inflection up in a dictionary).

PRONUNCIATIONS. Pronunciations are given in IPA (i.e. the International Phonetic Alphabet); I know of nary a North American who can make heads nor tails out of an IPA pronunciation. Outside of an upper-level linguistics class in a university, I don't even know where one could have been exposed to the IPA. My greatest, latest New Oxford American Dictionary, Third Edition has non-IPA pronunciations for their entries. The second issue with the pronunciations is that well over 95% of Turkish is both phonetic AND has a slight accent on the last syllable. So why waste all that ink and space? Just have pronunciations written out for those words with irregular accents or irregular pronunciations. The third issue is that I believe that the pronunciations for doubled vowels, which are rare in Turkish, are wrong about half the time in the book. For example the "aa" in the Turkish word for hour (saat) and in the word for promise (vaat) is shown as two syllables, when in fact a "doubled-a" merely means that the a sound is carried for a relatively long period, so both saat and vaat are just one syllable instead of the two the book indicates. I also saw that the "ii" in the Turkish word for poetry had the same issue. (If the discrepancy is a function of the particular Turkish dialect I learned, mea culpa.)

Automatically rendered wordlists similar to Google translate
By Gwilym
Recently, a large number of vocabulary books by A Taranov have appeared on the market. While the idea is good, I'm afraid that the execution is poor. I became suspicious when seeing that the same person had written identical books for 30-40 different languages. The impression is that the author has compiled automatic lists for numerous languages without even speaking the languages in question. Certainly not at the level required to capture different nuances.

In all of the Taranov word-lists I've seen, around 90% of the words are correct. 10% are completely wrong, which is quite close to the ration of Google translate. The pronunciation of Turkish in this book is way off, contradicting even basic principles of Turkish pronunciation.

Do yourself a favour a buy a proper book written by linguists who speak the two languages that the book consists of instead of a book that appears to be automatically compiled by a computer. That will save you from the sometimes hilarious mistakes in Taranov's books.

On the whole I like this book but I believe there is room for improvement to help the learner.
By Sylvia Herbert
I like the book as it groups vocabulary in themes. If I were the editor I would have included the name of the topic in Turkish as well. I know sometimes it is the first word (vegetables pg. 54) or you may find it further down (Human body and you find body pg. 44) but there are mote themes without their Turkish translation (family pg.60, cinema pg.146 includes 45 words, none of which is cinema). In the section "Vegetables"it says that pumpkin is "kabak" but that is a marrow.

About the Author
Betsy Byars began her writing career rather late in life. "In all of my school years, . . . not one single teacher ever said to me, 'Perhaps you should consider becoming a writer,'" Byars recalls. "Anyway, I didn't want to be a writer. Writing seemed boring. You sat in a room all day by yourself and typed. If I was going to be a writer at all, I was going to be a foreign correspondent like Claudette Colbert in Arise My Love. I would wear smashing hats, wisecrack with the guys, and have a byline known round the world. My father wanted me to be a mathematician." So Byars set out to become mathematician, but when she couldn't grasp calculus in college, she turned to English. Even then, writing was not on her immediate horizon.

First, she married and started a family. The writing career didn't emerge until she was 28, a mother of two children, and living in a small place she called the barracks apartment, in Urbana, Illinois. She and her husband, Ed, had moved there in 1956 so he could attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. She was bored, had no friends, and so turned to writing to fill her time. Byars started writing articles for The Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines. As her family grew and her children started to read, she began to write books for young people and, fortunately for her readers, discovered that there was more to being a writer than sitting in front of a typewriter.

"Making up stories and characters is so interesting that I'm never bored. Each book has been a different writing experience. It takes me about a year to write a book, but I spend another year thinking about it, polishing it, and making improvements. I always put something of myself intomy books -- something that happened to me. Once a wanderer came by my house and showed me how to brush my teeth with a cherry twig; that went in The House of Wingscopyright 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. Foxy Loxy
By E. R. Bird
Back in 1968, I think it's fair to say that your average male hero in children's fiction was usually an athletic or at least agile young man. The Hardy Boys, after all, were still popular and the degree of introspection most young men in today's fiction are apt to was significantly less. Not so the hero of Betsy Byars's, "The Midnight Fox". A small unassuming but still interesting book from the last 60s, the tale is of an unathletic average boy, his summer spent on a farm in the country, and his chance encounters with a mysterious woodland creature. There is no magic. No mystical occurrences or significant coincidences. Just ordinary people acting and reacting to one another and the appearance of the animal that divides them.

Tom is under the distinct impression that animals of all sorts, regardless of species or family, hate him. And this is just one of the myriad of reasons Tom does not want to stay on his Aunt Millie and Uncle Fred's farm. He'll be far away from his best friend, alone with family members he hardly knows, and he'll probably get loaded down with chores. Still, Tom's parents are adamant, so it's off to the farm for a couple months he goes. Of course, nothing is as bad as he had anticipated. His relatives are sweethearts, his chores miniscule and his best friend is writing him regularly. As for animals, Tom meets one that becomes his summer fixation. Living on the acres of land surrounding the farm is a rare and beautiful black fox with a single cub. Intrigued by this elusive creature, the boy discovers her lair and protects her secret. But when the fox angers the family by making off with a few chickens, Tom has to figure out exactly what to do to save his new friend from people with excellent fox-tracking skills.

Confession time: This is the first Betsy Byars book I've ever read. I know her name is often synonymous with great children's writers everywhere. And I know that not having read, "The Summer of the Swans" yet I'm probably going to earn the pity of children's librarians everywhere. But honestly I didn't know what to expect from her as an author. What I found, to my delight, was a writer who's not afraid to use humor while tapping into childhood fears. Tom's remarkable in some ways because he's just an average guy. He can't swim, can't run very fast, and isn't a fan of sports particularly. His best friend Petie (who conjures up fake headlines like, "BOY FALLS DOWN BANK WHILE GIRL ONLOOKERS CHEER", to describe his everyday experiences) is just as interesting as Tom and provides a lot of comic relief in this tale. But best of all, this book tapped into one of my favorite kiddie lit conventions. It didn't include a villain. Oh, it includes adults doing thoughtless acts without realizing how they affect the children around them, sure. But no one here is a bad guy. And no one here ends up as the evil nefarious fox hunter or anything like that. If there had been someone like that in this book, it probably would've tipped this book dangerously into the world of melodrama. Oog. Fortunately, this is not the case and "Midnight Fox" just strikes the reader as a good well-written piece o' work.

Now, if you know a kid who's into foxes and the like, this isn't a bad book to hand them. Fortunately, a love of those animals is not a requirement. This is just a good read for anyone. Boys and girls alike. It has an exciting conclusion, some spots of beautiful writing, and likable characters. It will charm any and all comers, regardless of age.

An outstanding book that has stood the test of time
By stuartm
I read this as a child and again recently as a father. Betsy Byars does an incredible job of capturing the confused, angry feelings of a young boy left on a farm for the summer by his parents. The main character may resemble today's kids even more than those of my youth - imagine asking a kid today to leave his TV, VCR and videogames for a whole summer! The twist comes when the young boy sees a black fox and gets caught up in this fox's life. The boy grows up by learning to care for something other than himself and in so doing affects everyone.

A Great Book
By A Customer
In the book, The Midnight Fox, There are four main characters.Their names are, Tom, the black fox, Aunt Millie, and lastly UncleFred. Tom, a 10 year old boy, goes for the summer to his Aunt Millie's farm. He discovers a fascinating black fox while he reads letters from his best friend under a tree, in the orchard. He watches the black fox queitly without moving under a tree, in the orchard throughout the summer. Tom goes to the farm because his parents want to go to Europe without him. Tom's parents send him away to the farm, until they get back from Europe. The book has a few pros and cons of th story. It is a good book because it is about a fox, and I love reading about animals. It puts you in suspense, and gets more interesting by the page. However, the only bad thing is that u dont know what happens to the black fox when she leaves the farm for good. I think since the story is mainly about the black fox, the author should say where the fox goes, and what she does. There are a few pros and cons of the story that has to do with the way the story is written. Firstly, the story has nice short chapters which is a great thing. It is good because if the chapters were really long, people would get bored of the book. Secondly, the book is also very well written. It is good because the printing is very big and that makes the book much easier to read. For some people, it is a bad thing but for me that is good. Lastly, the narrator is the main character in the book and I like that because I can learn more about that person. However, a con of the writing is that there are many confusing passages with information that needs to be inferred.

Book Review by Brandilyn
By PrismBookAlliance
3.5 of 5 Stars

For original review see The Prism Book Alliance Blog online

19 Gay Erotic Shorts. All about our men in uniform who love other men. Most of these authors are new to me, but I enjoyed seeing a little glimpse of each of their styles. Some I will seek out in the future, some I couldn’t finish in the now.

As with most anthologies there are some stories that stand out above the rest for whatever reason. Overall I give this 3.5 one-handed stars (i.e. it is pretty hot). One thing I noticed throughout much of this collection is that, unlike much of what we review here on Prism, this collection was clearly written for men. There is some crude, and utterly eye rolling, language used throughout. That being said; It was an enjoyable enough read, even for this non-male reader.

Some of the highlights and lowlights:

Weekend Leave by Shane Allison 3*
A worthy intro to the collection; it sets the tone well. A sweet little insta-love weekend tryst with a promise of more. The sex scenes were a little anti-climactic, but I enjoyed the connection between the MCs

Letter from Home by Jay Starre DNF
I hade to DNF this one. It literally made my stomach roil. The long and drawn-out, and repeated description of just what kinds of “spit” were being used for lube were just s bit too much for me. I also skipped Starre’s second entry in the book. I am not easily “grossed out,” to use the colloquial, but umm yeah. I couldn’t finish this one.

Do Ask, Do Tell by Julian Mark 3.25*
Do Ask, Do Tell was the first “one-handed read” in the collection. This is just a fun time had by the MC and various other military men he encounters along the way. This isn’t a romance; it is just a good filthy time. If you can get past the use of terms like “joy juice,” “boy juice”, and “cum cream” it is an enjoyable read.

Marine Guard by Dirk Strong 4.5*
This is my favorite of the first half of the book. It is a little M/M romance that spans either side of the repeal of DADT. The main characters are attracted to each other, but one is a Marine. As such, they dance around that attraction for a while. One night the Marine simply shows up at the other’s apartment to celebrate the repeal of DADT… naked… in bed… it is clearly the start of something and not just a hot tryst. I will certainly be looking for other titles from Mr. Strong.

So Then by Emily Moreton 3.5*
Another well written entry in the collection. I am not a huge fan of menage, and I don’t know if this was meant to be a one-off or the start of something more for these three, but it was hot enough. I enjoyed the interplay among the three main characters (even out of bed) and the fact that everything was not perfect in or out of bed. If it had been a longer format, I would like to have known a little more about Daniel’s “injury”, but other than that, no major complaints.

Liberty by Dominic Santi 4*
From the first words, I knew there was something different about Liberty from the first 7 entries in the collection. This one is set sometime in the future and focuses on a military couple who are trying to start a family. There is technology that allows them to mix the DNA of two men. It is an interesting premise, and the “Collection” scene was interesting. Again, you have to get past odd terminology like “asslips” it is a decent read.

A Voice in the Dark by Neil Plakcy 3.5*
One of the more complete stories in the collection, A Voice in the Dark pairs two POWs who happen to both be gay. Not being a military person myself, I don’t know how believable the story is, but giving a guy who hasn’t had a bath in over 2 weeks a blowjob does not sound all that sexy to me. I did have a certain amount of sympathy for the characters, however, and liked that there was a conclusion to the story, not just a hot time.

New Dog, Old Tricks by Aaron Michaels 4*
Another new to me author from whom I would be interested in reading more. New Dog, Old Tricks pairs a soon to be soldier with an existing soldier. It is basically an excuse for a hot time. Well written and enough there that it was not just a romp in bed. We knew a little about the characters first.

Ready Reserve by Logan Zachary 4*
I have heard of Logan Zachary, but have not had a chance to read any stories by this author. Ready Reserve is the story of two older reserves who come together on their two-week training exercise. Again, I don’t know how likely this story is, but it is a somewhat sweet coming together. Ready Reserve is not as hot as some of the offerings in this collection, but it is a worthy read.

Soaring by Michael Bracken 4*
Soaring is the story of a wedding made possible because of the repeal of DADT. An airman and his banker lover meet under the restrictions of DADT and have to find a way to make their relationship work. We start and end on the wedding day and look at the beginnings of the relationship in between. It was an interesting and sweet tale.

Candy Man by Gregory L Norris 3*
I am not entirely sure what to think about Candy Man. It starts with two soldiers meeting again after an unspecified time apart. I never fully understood why or how they got together, nor did I understand how or IF they wanted to be together again. The whole thing just had be off balance, I guess.

Semper Fi Wrestlers by Bearmuffin 2*
This one was pure Erotica, but not all that hot. The premise was just to see how much sex the MC could have. The POV switched among the players without warning and was hard to follow. However, what bothered me the most was the dubcon and abuse of power that was clearly in play in most of the scenes.

Comeuppance by Rob Rosen DNF
Okay so this one was annoying me, then it just got gross. I gave up on it.

The Rainbow Kerchief and the Full Moon by Jay Starre – DNS
After my experience with the first story by this author, I admit I did not even try to read this one.

The best military erotica I've ever read.
By QuixoticOrchid
Active Duty is an erotic 4th of July celebration of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Men in camouflage have always done it for me. And two or more hot, sweaty, dirty warrior types getting off and falling in love on the pages of this book for my personal entertainment --- What can I say? I like it. I like it a lot.

This was an amazing book. The stories are fun
By Natalie L. Sin
This was an amazing book. The stories are fun, touching, and balls to the wall! You will be punched in the feelings, which will make the tissues I recommend keeping nearby extra practical. Stand-outs include SHANE ALLISON, ROB ROSEN, and the ever delightful BEARMUFFIN.
