Wasko is a bit verbose

I have to agree with another reviewer. The text can be tedious and annoying while not conveying any information. Her many references to "which I will discuss in chapter (x)..." is so common it becomes a joke in her writing. While the text can be informative at times her writing style tends to be annoying and pretentious. It's reminiscent of a speaker who spends all their time telling you what they are going to tell you, that they dont really have that much to say in the end.

"Academia" at it's worst...

Being a Disney nut, I'll read just about anything that talks about the Disney corporation and culture. I found Understanding Disney at the library and eagerly picked it up. What a waste...
I should have been clued in on page 5 with this statement: "The continued expansion and popularity of the Disney empire calls for the deliberate integration of political economic analysis with insights drawn from cultural analysis and audience studies or reception analysis, or, in other words, analysis emphasizing the economic as well as the ideological, or production as well as consumption."
Huh?
She teaches a class at the University of Oregon on this stuff. Very academic and abstract, and too much so for my liking. While there were some interesting factoids about Walt's true history vs. the story told by Disney, she went into pure academia all too often. An example, labeled "Psychoanalysis And Pinocchio": "Brody observes the anal images and incorporation themes have been common in Disney tales, citing examples from The Three Little Pigs and Peter Pan. Anal images, especially featuring the "often-kick-in-the-butt" Jiminy Cricket, are a rampant in Pinocchio as images of erection (Pinocchio's nose, the donkey ears), and incorporation is appearnt in the scenes of Pinocchio and Gepetto in the whale's stomach."
Please!!!! You have *got* to be kidding me... She even covers Marxist analysis and the imperialist Disney. And kids pay to take this class?

Thought-provoking study of ethics and politics

Thomas Pogge, the Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale University, has written a remarkable study. He exposes as myths the ideas that capitalist globalisation is gradually improving the lives of the world's poor through trade and aid, and that any remaining problems are local in origin, from backward cultures to bad rulers.

Chapter 1 introduces the global justice debate. Chapter 2 presents "my central claim: the dominant Western countries are designing and upholding global institutional arrangements, geared to their domestic economic elites, that foreseeably and avoidably produce massive deprivations in most of the much poorer regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America." Chapter 3 looks at how the United Nations and the World Bank present the situation of the world's poor. Chapter 4 examines how the Bank fixes the international poverty line at an absurdly low level. Chapter 5 looks at the huge growth of global inequality between and within nations.

Chapter 6 argues that global poverty is a higher moral priority than the abortion debate and that pro- and anti-abortion activists should work together for the better moral cause of ending poverty. Chapter 7 studies 9/11 and concludes that the US and British `war on terror' `copied the two great moral failings of the terrorists' - harming the innocent and caring little about their actions' morality. Chapter 8 criticises Kofi Annan's misuse of the Rwandan genocide to press for more `humanitarian interventions'. Pogge's Chapter 9 claims to relate our foreign policy failings to the flaws of our domestic institutions, but in fact it only presents an arid scheme for reforming what he rightly calls the EU's `undemocratic rule'.

He notes, "Many more people - some 360 million - have died from hunger and remediable diseases in peacetime in the 20 years since the end of the Cold War than perished from wars, civil wars, and government repression over the entire twentieth century. ... 1,020 million human beings are chronically undernourished, 884 million lack access to safe water, and 2,500 million lack access to basic sanitation; 2,000 million lack access to essential drugs, 924 million lack adequate shelter and 1,600 lack electricity; 774 million adults are illiterate; and 218 million children are child laborers. Roughly one third of all human deaths, 18 million annually, are due to poverty-related causes, easily preventable through better nutrition, safe drinking water, cheap rehydration packs, vaccines, antibiotics and other medicines."

The rich states, and the international financial institutions they run, promote the avoidable evils of massive poverty and oppression, selfishly pushing rules and policies that they know harm the poor, while hypocritically claiming to promote development goals. The capitalist states rob the poor while claiming to aid them. Poor countries illicitly transfer an estimated $1 trillion a year to rich people in the rich countries.

Pogge concludes, "By foreseeably producing these effects, the present global order is unjust insofar as there are feasible (i.e., practicable and reachable) institutional alternatives that would not produce such catastrophic human suffering."

This poverty could be ended! $296 billion a year, just 0.66 per cent of global GDP, would lift above the poverty line of all those who live below this line.

Popular and scholarly works on the prevalence of goddess figures and worship throughout history have exploded on the marketplace. These two works approach the existence of the worship of a female divine from different tacks. Both attempt to make comparisons among very different cultures. Biaggi's is an archaeological work, comparing the artifacts and tombs of Malta and the Orkneys and Shetlands. Because Malta is located in the Mediterranean and the Orkneys and Shetlands off the coast of Scotland, it would seem that any comparison would be an enormous leap of conjecture. But Biaggi leaves out the speculation, instead descriging the artifacts, grave goods, extant buildings, and other items in great detail, leaving out the speculation. The work is copiously illustrated. Well written with solid scholarship, it is recommended for libraries interested in goddess scholarship and archaeology. Leeming and Page call their study a biography of the goddess. Deliberately, they do not enter into gender politics but trace the change in the perceptions of goddesses by telling stories from various cultures, including African, Indian, Native American, Greek, Celtic, Christian, and the modern Gaia hypothesis. The goddess moves from her beginnings as a powerful earth creatrix to being fertility goddess to being kidnapped and abused to being divinity disguised. The stories are told in an accessible style. This multicultural collection is recommended for libraries interested in stories on goddesses.

Great little book

This is a great little book that consists of a sequence of stories about the Goddess figure throughout history. Leeming and Page provide sparce though cogent introductions, occasional pictures, and then transcripts of the various Goddess tales. We are able to witness the transformation of the Goddess myths over time in a way that mere text could not provide.

One of the strengths of this book is its brevity, but that is also its chief deficit. Many of the tales are not properly identified, and there are no footnotes or notes of any kind. There is a brief selected bibliography and a short index. Perhaps a little more attention to cater to the needs of people with an academic interest would have made this a much stronger book, although as it stands it is well written, very interesting, and certainly informative.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the Goddess mythology, whether you are a beginning student or advanced scholar. Some of my own work has been in the area of early Christian history (see Jesus Who? and Mary Who? for my historical books on Jesus and Mary Magdalene) and I found new and useful information in Leeming and Page's little book.

The Bullfinch's Myhtology of the Female Divine

This book, and its companion, God, are excellent sources for all people who are exploring their spirituality, and even better for those that aren't. The authors present their brief introductions to the Goddess concept and let short retellings from world mythology supply their evidence, a system which both helps the book flow and makes the reader a more apt critic of the authors' interpretations of the myth. Granted, the retellings are short and the book's subject matter is too broad to be discussed in depth, but it presents its ideas of coherence and unity powerfully and respectfully, satisfying to both the mind and the soul. I recommend it wholeheartedly, especially if you are a Neopagan, this book makes an excellent outsiders' view of a subject dear to our hearts.

A glimpse into a unique private art collection.

This unique book gives readers a glimpse into the private art collection of Egyptian art connoisseur and gallery owner, Mrs. Sherwet Shafei. The book includes a large number of paintings and sculptures with a description of each piece. Also artists' biographies are included at the end of the book in a concise yet comprehensive manner. The introduction by author Mona Abaza is relatively long for art books, but I found it to be very interesting and informative as it addresses important changes in Egypt's modern art world and art acquisition trends reflective of cultural and economical changes in Egypt and the Middle East in general. The collection of art in this book is simply exquisite. My personal favorite is her collection of brilliant artist Kamal Khalifa, as I scarcely see his art presented in exhibits. Kamal Khalifa lived a short tragic life of a truly "starving artist", yet has such a unique style that makes one wonder of what would have been if he was still around. Egyptian modern art is one of the best kept secrets of Egypt. What makes it even more so is the rarity of art books introducing modern Egyptian artists to the world. This makes this book even more precious. I simply love it!

About the Author

Shun Lien Chuang, PhD, is the MacClinchie Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His research centers on semiconductor optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, IEEE, and the Optical Society of America. He received the Engineering Excellence Award from the OSA, the Distinguished Lecturer Award and the William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award from the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, and the Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Very detailed, Nice section on calculating strain effects...

I have mainly used this book to help me understand how to incorporate the effects of tensile and compressive strain in quantum well calculations. It does this very clearly. It covers many other topics, but the main points are: 1) This is a graduate-level text probably unsuitable as a first exposure to this area for undergraduates; and 2) the author is not afraid of diving into the technical nitty-gritty of the areas he covers. He does a great job of explaining concepts in a relatively short amount of text (i.e. it is terse, yet understandable for the most part) and he provides good detail, including much data on III-V material properties. As another example, it gives a complete but condensed discussion of the Marcatili and effective index approximations for calculating single mode cutoffs in rectangular dielectric waveguides for lasers or PICs. This is a great reference book for those who actually want to calculate or design something without using a canned program.

Excellent book for basic physics of optoelectronics

The book starts with the very basic equations of electromagnetic and semiconductor theory and builds up to more advanced topics such as band structure calculations for semiconductors including strained quantum wells, various optical transitions processes, optical absorption spectra, etc. In addition, the book covers the basic theory of laser cavity resonance and this includes the distributed feedback laser theory. Various waveguide, electro-optical modulators and photodetector principles are also treated in clear detail. The book brings you up to the level of which the research papers in the optoelectronic area has been written.

First of all, I want to express regret that there is no excellent book covering the area of theory, fabrication, characterization of semiconductor lasers/devices. Some are too easy and some are too difficult. The symbols and convention are not unified at all, even simple "rate equations" have a lot of versions.

Overall, this book is good for graduate students. A good companion for advanced study. However, I don't like too many equations with only few explanations. By the way, on the small signal analysis of laser modulation, I recommend Coldren's "Diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits". Rate equations there make more sense to me. If you find it hard to understand, maybe try Parker's "Physics of Optoelectronics", an 5-star book. The strength of this book is its completeness, especially on optics, quantum mechanics and electromagnetics.

Really well written!

I'm about halfway through Learning RSLogix 5000 and I am loving it. There are a number of poor PLC programming books out there - books full of editorial issues, books written by authors who may be able to PLC program well but are for sure butchers of the English language, and books full of obsolete information and impractical sidebars. People who work in automation know that one thing they can never have enough of is time - which means it's imperative to just stop reading crummy books. And as well, it's imperative to promote a great book when you find one. Austin writes very well, at a level that's pragmatic, well-paced for his intended audience and provides illustrations that help provide clarity to complex topics. Very well done!

The book is a great read for those both new to Industrial Controllers as well as seasoned practitioners. The information is presented in a pragmatic fashion - giving real life reason why you might want/not want to do something - not just a theoretical book. I appreciated all of the side note information: there is a good deal of ancillary information in there. I also appreciated the quality and quantity of illustrations in the book - it keeps the read interesting and not dry. The author definitely has a great breadth and depth of knowledge which is apparent while the various topics of networking and Industrial Control Systems are discussed.

I'm actually somewhat disappointed by this book

I'm actually somewhat disappointed by this book. I have both the study guide and this question book. There are a lot of questions in this book that are exact duplicates of questions in the end-of-chapter quizzes and the end-of-book practice test in the study guide. I expected this book to be completely different questions, but it isn't. Bummer.

I used this to test/evaluate my comprehension of the materials from the study guide of the same author. It certainly helped with the exam preparation. Don't expect the questions to be one to one match to the exam, I think may be 80% closely. But the practice exam guide will help you to firm up your understanding. Passed on first attempt!
