Informative, to a point

This is a brief, straightforward explanation of prokaryote and eukaryote genetics and the basic techniques of gene cloning--along with a discussion of various applications. There are no recipes or protocols, and readers wanting details of HOW to do it will need to look elsewhere (there is a chapter-based list of recommended readings at the end of the book--there are no footnotes or within-text references). There is a reasonably useful index--although only alpha and beta symbols have their own entries for terms/phrases they lead--not lambda--and there are some two-stage "see" references. The downrating is primarily because of the typos and odd grammatical constructions throughout the text. This is a second edition and I'm surprised (for example) that no one noticed that it's FLUORESCENT not FLOURESCENT (a misspelling that is easily caught by any spellchecker)--or that LATER and LATTER are not the same thing--or that there are regularly missing articles (a, an, the) in noun phrases. Since I'm not a geneticist or have any hands-on experience in gene cloning, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the technical terminology and protocol descriptions.
