Mission (Bloomsbury Reader), by Patrick Tilley

What would you do if, through an unexpected twist of fate and time, you came face to face with Jesus of Nazareth? In the flesh. A living, breathing, three-dimensional figure with a disconcertingly casual manner. Leo Resnick, a smart young Manhattan lawyer, and his girlfriend, Dr Miriam Maxwell, are confronted with this very reality. Leo's record of his encounter with The Man is fast-paced and thoughtful at the same time. Here Tilley showcases his ability to explore vast themes whilst creating a page-turning level of excitement. If you've ever looked up at the stars and wondered what it all means, this is the book you've been waiting for.

Mission, first published in 1981, is a sci-fi novel of biblical proportions full of wit, theology and – in an inspired twist – aliens.

waiting for a reprint
By mathilde de gardin
I read Mission for the first time some 16 years ago, quite soon after it was first published. Mission had me hooked up, right from the start.
What would you do if he (aka He) dropped by, fueling your doubts in the old story, providing you with a new one?. Or if you were a docter in intensive care, when a patient is brought in with these remarkable, even typical, wounds?
There is a sense of wonder in this book, that's firmly based in our ancient Lore and recent archeology. I'm sceptic at best when it comes to religion, but a very interested sceptic. This book set my thoughts in motion and shifted my views. Somewhat.
Besides from all that, it's a very well written book, with well filled out characters, a good plotline, attention to details, tension and thought intermingled handsomely, and oh, such a nice sting in the tail.
It's too bad that there are so little people who have read the book, and that there are so few new copies available to give away to my friends.
Please reprint this book! It's timeless.

A truly imaginative, thought provoking, excellent read
By A Customer
I have now read this book 4 times and I always find something new, something I didn't get before each time I read it. The story is truly thought provoking and Patrick Tilley has done a wonderful job of research on the bible and associated stories to attain such a detailed understanding of the life and times of Jesus and his followers. The story is full of wry humour and is written in an easy style. The situations the star of the book, Leo, finds himself in are mind-boggling at times, you find yourself thinking "now what if that were me?" all to often! The ending is superb as is the entire book. Make every effort to lay your hands on a copy of this book, it is one of the best I have ever read.
And just a quick note to the author, Patrick Tilley......if you are out there somewhere, please write some more, you are a great writer (I have read all of your books, Fadeout, Mission, The Amtrak wars etc.). I need more....

Awesome!

A friend told me about this book and I purchased it the next day. The bookstore only had one copy left so it was definitely meant for me. What an eye opener! I bought the book in 1984, and I still have my original copy which is marked up and dog-eared throughout. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. I found copies in the UK for my friends who fell in love with it (the U.S. copy is bigger than the UK book and has large text). I refer to the Mission often. Was it fact or fiction? You decide. Who cares.
