Charming

This book is essential for all little girls (and not so little girls!) learning to sew. There has yet to be a childs sewing book as well done as Mary Frances and the Timble People.
If you think this book, written in the Edwardian era, would probably be too hard or full of too many confusing terms for a child, think again! The projects are direct, simple, fast, and most of all, fun. With parental assistance, children as young as seven could easily work through this book, and very young children could enjoy the story by itself without even doing the projects. The doll patterns are charming and work up quickly, the style simple and straightforward, and the little story about the 'Timble People' is utterly adorable.
16 inch dolls are hard to come by, and I know this is one drawback of the book. However, you can easily re trace the patterns to fit an 18 inch ('American Girl' or 'Gotz' doll.) Take your pattern peice(s) and retrace on another peice of paper, adding one inch to every side. Follow instructions as usual. For loose fitting patterns like the apron, the pinafore, etc, this wasn't even nessisary.

16" Doll Pattern Not Included

Just purchased this book to give as a Christmas present for my Mom. During the summer and after school, Mom looks after two of my neices that are 5 and 8 years old.
The book is softcovered, consisting of 280 pages and the illustrations within are fully black and white. I like this book as the patterns are full sized and "reads" extremely well for a child, with directions clearly written.
I rate this book 4 stars because the 16" doll pattern IS NOT included as a project with the book. Major bummer! The 16" companion doll pattern named "Mary Marie" Making Memories (designed by Ellen Thompson) must be purchased separately. I've recently located such pattern and it was hard to come by. (The Mary Marie doll is also sold as a porcelain reproduction and she is beautiful.)
Truly, I believe this book makes an excellent tool to create beautiful home spun gifts and memories when used by a loving adult (Mother/Nana) and child. What a wonderful way to learn to sew!

An enjoyable anthology

City Smells is an anthology of flash fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction all based on a similar theme. The variety within this collection is exceptionally good, and I really enjoy the fact that the selections contained in this anthology are short--it makes for quick and easy reads while still remaining quite thought provoking. It's also refreshing to read so much material by several emerging writers. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something fresh and a little different.

Something for everybody

'City Smells' is a collection of flash fiction, fiction, poetry and non-fiction all tied to the theme of the title. This is a great book, especially for dipping in and out of. The writers come from all over the world, and for that reason 'City Smells' is rich in its variety of writing styles and language, but, more than that, it takes the reader into a world diverse with smells and the many ways in which people live with and remember them.

Introduction not a study

If you have spent any time trying to understand persuading and influencing through reading and studying this book is not for you. It is very light and introductory. Pass it on.
If you don't know anything about the field it will be a great introduction - but will leave you feeling like you need more. Gork names many of the literary sources he used so you will be able to conduct your own reading and study. I am personally disappointed as I thought that I would be learning from a mentalist, real tricks and trades, and the book was a short overview of everything I already knew.

I was disappointed. I thought that this book would have more ...

As a fan of his you tube videos, I was disappointed. I thought that this book would have more techniques (like in his videos), but it rehashes a lot of stuff that is already out there. It markets for his live performances and he says that I can't show you how I do what I do because it would take too long. Very poor showing...In one of his videos, he tells you a simple technique and then demos it out in the field.

For dullards only.

This book is absurdly obvious. Like "work area should be well illuminated". Oh really? I did not know that. What would have been better is: For X type of work area, should be lit to Y luminous units of measurement. The Practice tests are similarly written. This is like an introductory guide. I'm sorry but at this price ( I paid well over 100$ ) I need more. Very disappointed in my professor.

The book is excellent. The electronic format sucks.

Keeping in mind this is a reference book:

1. The index of my book has no page numbers or links to the content, rendering it of no use. It consists literally of text, nothing else.
2. References to page numbers in the text have no links, rendering these also useless.
3. There are no page numbers (no rendering as a page). This is a book without pages. Strange, and the "location" marker is of absolutely no use.
4. There is no search feature. If it existed, then I could at least search for the text that I wish to find.
5. I paid almost $50 for a reference book without a means of finding the contents within it.
