Succinct & Simple to Follow

I have read, literally, hundreds of self help books and I have a Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, so trust me when I say, this little book sums everything up in a succinct version of how to LIVE a happier life. Alan has taken complex theories and reduced them to steps, EVERYONE can manage in order to get their life under their own control. I was moved, inspired and encouraged to add this to my own personal, "hour of power." If you want to get down to the nuts and bolts of how to live a happy life, skip all those long and boring self help books and read this book alone. It will save you time and perhaps even save your life. You can finish it in one setting. I encourage you, as does the author, to read it many times. Action is one of the steps in this book, take action now, read this book.

This book really delivers!

I started the book and couldn't put it down! I read it in one sitting. It really hit home. It was about me and my life. I wanted to be happier, I just wasn't sure how to get there. I felt like I should have been happier. I knew some of the secrets, but when you put them all together, it's a revelation. This book gave me a roadmap. Now I know where I want to go, what I want in order to be happier, and what I need to do to be happier. Now I know how to get there.
This book doesn't just tell you the cryptic secrets, it unlocks the secrets. It tells you exactly what to do and how to do it.
I love the direct, concise style. I love the clear action items. I love that I was inspired to do them immediately. I love the change it's already made in my life.

This is how instruction manuals should be written

I edit and lay out books for a living, and I supplement my brief formal education by self-teaching from books. I have no fewer than 15 such manuals on the shelf over my Mac, on subjects ranging from HTML to the Adobe Creative Suite to QuickBooks and beyond. I wish Claudia McCue had written every one of them. Her writing is clear and concise -- she clearly knows her subject matter AND how people learn. In the editorial part of my career I've worked on hundreds of nonfiction titles, and I can assure you that this is a rare combination. The writing is not only informative, it's engaging (and frequently funny); this is the only manual I've ever read cover to cover, like a novel.

The author's explanations of complex subjects are wonderful. Until now, for example, I've never really understood concepts like trapping and RIP-ping. I've always absorbed the minimum I needed to know while the rest of the explanation turned into the "wahh-wahh" adult voices in a Peanuts cartoon. Whether that's due to the density of my own skull or the poor explanations I was getting, I don't know -- what I do know is that this author's explanations have effectively closed the circuit for me on these subjects. I actually get them now. And then there are the chapters with production tips for each relevant program in the Creative Suite -- they're like mini-Master Classes. I can't express how much my workflow has improved after reading this book in general and these chapters in particular.

After a couple of months on my desk, my copy is dog-eared and bristling with sticky-notes. I've referred to it for different questions on each of my last three print projects (two trade paperbacks and a coffee-table book), and I expect I'll be referring to it for many projects to come.

A must have wealth of knowledge!

Claudia has put together a catalog of information that any designer who prints must read!

Her vast knowledge in the printing industry reflects in each chapter with easy to grasp, pertinent information. This has become my go to book in my new career as a Graphic Designer/ Prepress Operator.
Trust me, this is a must have for any designer to keep with them.
A great guide for the various aspects of print design whether you're working in house printing or sending them off to a press. They will thank you greatly if you follow Claudia's guides for setting up files and artwork, and you might even save yourself or your company some money.
She is an InDesign Master so you couldn't learn from a better teacher. Her tips on how to utilize the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite are great.
Just quit reading this review and go buy this book if you are thinking about it, it will pay for itself with its content.

This book was required reading for two of my graduate level History courses. It introduces the reader to ways to learn about the past by combining objects and archaeological sites with written documentation and oral history accounts. The information is useful and it is delivered in an interesting manner, making this book easy and fun to read. I highly recommend.

Little things mean a lot

I enjoyed Deetz' newly updated introduction to Historical Archaeology in America. He makes clear that much can be gleaned from the seemingly insignificant material things that are left behind in the process of living. I greatly enjoyed his putting the pieces of the puzzles together. Sometimes the result was an interesting surprise. For instance, I didn't know that porches, which became so popular in America, were not a feature of European houses and were introduced by Africans. "Shotgun houses" also have African roots. Another surprising story is told by the changing styles of Colonial gravestones. They change subtly as the religious climate changes. The oldest being very stiff and stern and later ones becoming more decorative, replacing deaths heads with angels.

You just can't beat The Cat in the Hat!!

Theodor Seuss Geisel (AKA Dr.Seuss) wrote and drew MANY classic children's books. The Cat in the Hat was written in 1957 along with The Grinch - both are illustrated by him as well. He once claimed he never wrote stories with a moral but I find that many of his books do have a moral - not sure why he said he didn't.

I remember both books as a youngster as they went way beyond See Dick Run, etc. I have a 'gift' for reading - I was reading Mark Twain in the 3rd grade and was tested at a high school Senior level as a 5th grader. As an 7th grader I tested as a college graduate in reading. The funny thing is I can't spell worth a crap - I finally resorted to just memorizing the words in the early grades as I just could not sound them out. I was once told that I - somehow - learned to read a whole paragraph at a time instead of individual words. As a high school senior I was tested at 1600 to 1800 words a minute (I was told the average person reads more 200 to 300 words a minute at that time).

But I loved Dr. Suess books - I believe all kids love them - my daughter learned to read from us reading the book 2 or 3 times and then expecting her to at least learn to recognize the 1 and 2 letter words (and very quickly she progressed to 3 & 4 letter words - it was quite simply amazing to she her progress!) - she shocked the Kindergarten teacher as she could already read at around the 3rd grade by then. The stories are silly enough that when coupled with the bright colors of the illustrations and a parent helping them along that most kids 'teach' themselves to read without even realizing it.

A BTW - I caught my daughter 'memorizing' both the text in the stories AND her spelling words. I very quickly got her to stop 'learning' to spell that way as I didn't want to suffer the way I have with my horrible spelling. However - the memorizing large amount of text has lead to her being in a movie, some commercials and several plays in college.

I bought 2 copies of this book to give (along with The Grinch) to 2 of my wifes relatives who are expecting in a few months. This quite simply a book that all children will benefit from be exposed to.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL CHILDREN - a rare rating of a perfect 10 from me!!!

Seuss' "Cat In the Hat" is a classic for good reason.

Personally, I've never been a fan of Dr. Seuss. His stuff is just too psychedelic and I have a sneaking suspicion that he wrote most of his "best" work while high on shrooms.

Despite this, Seuss' "Cat In the Hat" is a classic for good reason... it connects with most children and seems to engage them in reading.
My own experience with this book with my 4 year old son is nothing short of astonishing. My son is learning to read and this book's melodic and simplified vocabulary keeps him engaged and builds his confidence with each sentence. The pictures are whimsical (kinda disturbing for me), and in a weird way, comforting for children. My kid can now recite most of this book from memory now and feels confident enough to read other sources.

I'm only knocking off a star because the pictures still give me the heebie jeebies, but that's just me.

I like the other books better.

Actually, I'd forgotten that this one is where the cat makes a huge mess! He does clean it up before the mom gets home but...(hey, that's just me)! So, I'm kind of unsure about the subject matter; maybe I'm being nit-picky. I like the other ones better.
