I am disappointed.

Finished this book today. This is an ok introduction, but after reading it carefully I don't feel that I am prepared to use the library effectively and I need to seek out other resources just to get started. It taught me enough to have some idea what I need to (but don't yet) know to be productive with jQuery.

The book is only 151 pages and the intro chapter starts at 11. Real jQuery discussion doesn't actually start until 49, and there are numerous pages that are half empty, a few are totally empty. Add to that the VERY LARGE font that could have been typeset with a crayon. The content is just sparse.

An example of a deficiency that really bothers me is a table of 18 jQuery custom selectors in chapter 5. Nowhere is it mentioned that the table provides only a partial list; I understood only that I was reading a list of the available selectors. But right after the table, is a set of 8 examples (generally a positive feature of the book). The second example shows use of a selector that is not listed in the table, which of course leads me to immediately question what else is missing. I now wonder how vast is the set of things that the book omits. Fortunately there are ways to investigate this online, but of course that is not why one buys a book (at least not me).

Further there are enough editorial errors (extra or missing words) to distract, as well as a few code problems that can lead the reader astray. Maybe the code has been fixed in the online distribution, I have not yet checked. Being familiar with javascript helped me to recover from confusion in a couple of places, but the intended audience here appears to be the novice, and I feel sorry for those who study this carefully with the aim or learning from scratch.

I did get an orientation and learn some useful things with this, which is why I am not rating one star. But if I am going to pay money for a book, it needs to better fulfill its purpose. Sorry, but this did not meet my expectations, no joy here.

No kidding, it actually is a joy to learn jQuery this way.

Alan Forbes has been programming for twenty years, so you'd think by now he'd have learned to write dry, unapproachable prose that makes you decide to hire a programmer instead of learning to do it yourself. But he's one of those rare experts who know how to get the subject across to those who have no expertise at all, and he does it in a way that makes you want to keep reading. The book is as close to being a page-turner as you're likely to find in the programming category.

This should be your first jQuery book, but you won't fully appreciate what Forbes has done here unless you've tried some of the other books on the subject, as I have. The writing is Simon-simple. The definitions and explanations are clear. The book is packed with examples and illustrations. Most important, Forbes always puts things in context. He doesn't just tell you how to do something. He tells you why you'd want to do it.

As you progress through the book, you'll be building a site for a friend. Well, actually, not a friend, but a used car salesman. But by the time you finish this on-the-job training, the salesman will be your friend, and you'll know a heck of a lot of jQuery. As your friend the used car salesman would say, how can you turn down a deal like that?

Roughly the first half of the book teaches you the nuts and bolts of jQuery. The second half is like a candy store for website creators. You learn how easy it is, using jQuery and its add-ons, to easily install predefined custom themes, validate forms, create a date-picker, auto-complete like Google, improve on HTML buttons, create beautiful menus, quickly create web pages that are optimized for mobile devices, and more.

Forbes promises that "this book will change the way you write your web applications." It's definitely going to change the way I write mine.

Quick, simple, weak

This is an interesting but very weak intro to JQuery. By beginner I assume the author means to JQuery - you better have a full understanding of HTML5 & CSS3 if you want to use the book.

The examples are real and working code, but exceptionally trimmed of much beyond the specific item being demonstrated. And the demo's are pretty dull. The book could give someone with no exposure to any Java a quick intro to some of the things that can be done. You can read and pretty much test-drive the code in 1 to 1.5 days of light reading. (Positive note: While the book has a few typo's in the text it is one of the few where I don't see a single error in the code. That's a MUST for a beginners book!)

It's not a bad guide. It has a couple very useful links for real documentation (although a good link to the full JQuery API would add at least 1, possibly 1.5 stars to the rating). As it is the book provided me with nothing new other than a single link.

What Amazon does not tell you is that this book is (sometimes) available for FREE (and was when I placed my order). Kind of sorry I paid for it.

Although Gordon Childe was not appointed to his first job in the field of prehistoric archaeology until he was 35 years of age, his achievements earned him general recognition as the most eminent and influential scholar of European prehistory in the twentieth century. An unconventional and eccentric character, he was totally dedicated to his chosen field and is remembered throughout the world as a pioneer in the study of prehistory: fresh excavations and discoveries had produced a wealth of archaeological evidence, but no one before Professor Childe had brought the data together and related them to a broader view of the history of civilization. And when he published those highly successful books- "Man Makes Himself" and "What Happened in History"- they did more than any other work before to popularize the study of prehistory everywhere.... A generous man, popular with this students, Childe's eccentricity was the endearing kind: sometimes he would mumble incomprehensibly in lectures; well-known for his left-wing views, he would never lose the opportunity of teasing the 'establishment' - always having a copy of the Daily Worker prominently displayed on his desk, or turning up to give a lecture in central Asian national costume. On his sixty-fiftth birthday he returned to Australia - his native land- and six months later committed suicide in the Blue Mountains. Before doing so he had posted a remarkable and moving letter which not only set out some of the reasons for taking his own life, but was also a thoughtful essay on the problem of old age: it is printed in full in this book. The author of this first biography of Gordon Childe took an honours degree in the department of prehistory and archeology at the University of Sheffield, and was later awarded an M.A. for a thesis on Childe's work.

He has recently finished his MSc in Computer Science with a specialization in Graphics and Multimedia, and he is currently working full-time as a game programmer for a local company. He runs an educational blog about game development and enjoys sharing his knowledge with the community whenever possible. His main interests in game development are graphics and audio programming. He also has a strong interest in music and synthesizers, having played the keyboard for most of his life.

Audio programming introduction with C++ and FMOD

This is an introductory book for [intermediate] C++ developers who want to start in audio programming, mainly using FMOD. The author starts by presenting some universal audio concepts in the first chapter such as volume, pitch, frequency, bit depth and audio file formats. Then he introduces FMOD and explains how to add it to a [Visual Studio C++] project, initialize FMOD, load/stream/play sounds, and check for errors. After this FMOD introduction, there is a project to build a simple C++ class audio manager. In Chapter 3, the author expands the manager to include audio control (playback, volume, pitch, panning, channel grouping).

With the audio basics covered, the author explains 3D audio and how to work with positional audio, reverb and effects in FMOD. When working with positional audio, the developer must deal with occlusion and obstacles that affect the way audio is perceived by the player. This is a topic that could be further explored by the author, as it is touched in a couple of pages only. The same goes for DSP effects, which is presented in the last 3 pages of the same 3D audio chapter.

The FMOD Designer tool is also introduced, which is a great tool from Firelight Technologies (developer of FMOD) for those who are more design-oriented. The author explains how to create simple sound events (such as footsteps and breaking glass SFX), multi-track events (e.g. interactive footsteps, car engine) and interactive music, and how to call these via code. For bigger projects or projects that need something more than basic audio control, this tool is a must.

The final chapter involves low-level audio programming, i.e. how to work with the bytes of a digital sound file - loading, playbacking, changing properties, etc. Even though it still uses FMOD for audio control, the reader gets an 'under the hood' insight of the higher level audio APIs.

At ~100 pages, this is a good introductory book for developers who are not familiar with audio programming, especially since there are not many books on the topic (there are some that focus on DirectSound/XACT programming, but these technologies seems to be pretty much dead -or are dying- and are MS-only). It is targeted at C++, but developers from other languages (e.g. C#) might benefit from the book as well, as FMOD supports other languages. The author's decision on FMOD is a good one too: FMOD is a multi-platform technology, supports many audio formats, and has been adopted by many successful games, companies and game engines (e.g. Unity, UE3). Previously I worked on a multi-platform game using FMOD for audio and the results were very nice.

To get you started with audio programming, I think the contents and length of the book are OK, although the author could go deeper into the 3D audio and DSP effects section (and include 3D audio code in the audio manager as well; source-code is provided for chapters 2, 3 and 6 only).

It is worth mentioning that FMOD Studio is not covered in the book, and for anything that is not audio-related (window, render and input management), the author uses SFML (Simple and Fast Multimedia Library).

I would like to see another book from the author/publisher that deals with more advanced audio programming, such as more details on how to work with 3D audio (and the implications associated with it), real-time DSP effects, dynamic audio, and performance. Would also be good to see a project dealing with FMOD Designer (or FMOD Studio) and code, and not just examples.

Great introduction to audio for game development

Overall this book is exactly as the title suggests, an introduction to audio for game development with C++. It assumes that you are at least familiar with C++ and jumps right into audio. It should be noted that this book uses the FMOD audio engine.

The first chapter serves as an introduction to the core concepts of audio. It's short, sufficient and has good visuals to explain each topic. We learn of sound waves and their properties volume and pitch. Then we moved on to representing a sound wave as either analog or digital and using sampling rate and bit depth when converting from analog to digital to control the quality. Last we saw that audio systems can have more than one output and various file formats.

For the second and third chapter we get started with FMOD, audio playback and audio control. First we get an overview of FMOD and how to set up the Programmer's API with a Visual Studio project. Once that is setup we are ready to start! We learn to create and manage the FMOD audio system, how to load sounds both for streaming and into memory and then how to play them. Next we get into checking for errors to make sure everything is running as it should. Finally we're ready to create our own audio manager class. Now that we can load and play audio files the author goes into how to ways in which we can control the playback. The author then expands on our audio manager class after going over how to control the playback, volume, pitch, panning and channel grouping.

Next in the fourth chapter the author gets into some more advanced features. We start off with 3D audio learning positional audio dealing with different audio soucres coming from specific locations. The author then explains how we simulate how the audio interacts with the environment through a technique called reverberation. Naturally most environments aren't empty so we get into how to handle obstruction and occlusion from objects. The last couple of pages in this section go over DSP effects(digital signal processing) giving us two quick samples.

In the fifth chapter we get to learn about FMOD Designer and how to use sound events vs. audio files like we have been using. We start off learning to create simple events and how to avoid repetitive sound effects. The author goes over a few examples: a footstep sound loop, breaking glass sound effect and and an ambient track of singing birds. We then move on to multi-track events, these are a significantly more powerful. Expanding on our previous examples we make the footstep loop interactive allowing it to be more versatile. The singing birds turns into a complex forest with different animals that can also change based on the time of day in your simulation. I thought these were some pretty cool and useful examples that show off how powerful this tool really is.

The fourth and fifth chapters contain code snippets but there is no demo project in the downloadable source code. As this book is a getting started guide and these chapters cover more advanced topics i'm okay with this. Unfortunately there is a shortage of books covering audio for games, but it would be nice to have these topics covered in more detail in a later book.

Finally in the last chapter we dive deep into the low-level audio. Here we work with the bits and bytes of audio data and learn to code much of what FMOD already does for us. We will learn to load a WAV file, play and control the audio data, implement a basic delay effect and synthesize some basic sound waves. Although FMOD already handles everything we recreate in this chapter its a great learning experience to take a look at the underpinnings and see how they work and would be implemented.

All of the source code compiled cleanly and ran as expected. You'll have to download FMOD Ex and SFML yourself. The author uses Visual Studio 2010. and make sure the project properties are set up (Additional Include Directories, Lib and Post-Build Event to copy the dll's to your output directory).

This book was pretty short and to the point. It was easy to read, contained good examples and covers exactly what you would expect when reading the title. If you're looking to add some audio to your game and aren't already using an engine or framework that already has audio functionality included I would recommend this book as a great starting point.

The perfect book to start developing software with audio

This is the perfect book to everyone that wants to start using sounds within an application. It provides you with very important data in order to understand how to exploit the sound capabilities. It is performed step by step and through examples. It starts with all the basic data about sound theory like volume, pitch, channels, etc. Then it shows you the data file formats and how to start a first app using sound management playing sounds from a file using FMOD as sound engine.

In general the book examples are based on C++ and considers the use of the FMOD sound engine for them. The book also explains the FMOD EX API and Design tools and how to exploit them practically in all the possibilities. It covers also the use of file in memory or as stream, how to load, play and manage the sound, how to exploit the channels, pitch, volume and panning, mono, stereo and 3d sound simulation, how to simulate an environment with obstruction for the sounds.

Personally I selected this book because I'm involved in a personal project that aims to create an application for kids with learning disabilities. This book has helped me to understand how to manipulate the sounds in a manner that enables me to adapt the sound of my app to kids with sensory disorders. So this book is not only for game development then I consider this book very relevant to everyone that has a project that requires to exploit the sound capabilities within a software application in different ways.

I strongly recommend this book to every developer experienced or beginner that aims to create software using sound.

A book to enjoy front to back or for just dipping into

This is a very enjoyable book. Bob Dole has a fine sense of humor and has selected witty sayings by politicians on a variety of topics in a range of situations. Senator Dole has organized them topically and I found all of them funny and many of them hilarious. A few are even worth committing to memory.
It isn't a long book, but it offers a lot of great stories. What is even better is that Mr. Dole shares his own knowledge of some of the people he quotes in the book and of the institutions in Washington that he knows so well. It is a book you can enjoy reading from front to back or just dipping into briefly again and again.
A word to speakers who would use the anecdotes from this book: be careful. I remember when this book first came out and politicians everywhere were quoting this or that story from it and it was a bit embarrassing to hear. This kind of humor is something that has to be used with a delicate touch and with the best style and timing. You can't just say the words and expect the big laugh. It just doesn't work that way. I always enjoyed Senator Dole's sense of humor and he could pull it off with a bit of an acerbic touch. Some folks didn't like that spice, but I always did.

Great fun, exposes funny bone of otherwise pompous pols

Bob Dole does a clever job of gathering vignettes and anecdotes of pols, some of whom we might not have suspected of possessing wit and humor. This book should be especially useful for speechwriters, and for students of political science.

About the Author

He lives near Munich, Germany.

Imperial Splendor

Wow, this book is incredible, it is quite frankly a perfect book on this subjuct. This book does not leave one leaf unturned, it has amazing B&W photos and the research is impecable, I just kept thinking, this took a great deal of time and effort to put together, that it had to have been a labor of love or they would have never gotten through it. The effort by the British Raj to build Imperial New Delhi from scratch in two decades is a tribute to British imperial power at its zenith. Whether you think it was wrong or right of the Raj to brand its imperial power on India forever, in the form of Western classical meets Indian mogul, you can't help but be blown away by the scope and beauty of Imperial Delhi. Anyone who has any, I mean any, interest in this subject should buy this book, they will not be disappointed, it is a facinating story of the ultimate colonial power and its effect on this amazing country called India. I will have this book in my collection forever and if you knew me you would know that this is high praise indeed.

An excellent treatment of Imperial Delhi

As someone who lives and works in New Delhi, I've often thought that Raj Path (the Central Vista) reminded me of Washington DC and Paris, and now my suspicions have been confirmed thanks to Volwahsen. I've been to most of the prominent buildings built by the British in New Delhi and the author does them justice. The book is beautifully illustrated and supported by numerous maps and photos. The text is well-written and knowledgable.
My only criticism (a minor one) is that Volwahsen at times assumes that the reader has more than a general knowledge of architecture. For example, he frequently refers to the "stupa" without ever really defining it (a sort of Buddhist roof style). I would have added an appendix with a listing of architectual terms used along with definitions and context.
This should not detract from anyone's decision to read Volwahsen's work, however, as he has done a masterful job. I heartily recommend this book.

The book illustrates and studies many new, as well as older well known theories behind the Lutyens Delhi Plan. Volwahsen demonstrates a tremendous amount of research as well as insight that has gone into the subject, which in turn, make you think for yourself.

A must for anyone remotely interested in the subject.

Wee-Hyong Tok is a program manager on the SQL Server Integration Services team. He has worked on several different aspects of the product. Prior to joining Microsoft, Wee Hyong was a Microsoft MVP. He is a frequent presenter at Microsoft conferences. Wee Hyong is deeply passionate about how organizations can make use of business intelligence tools to derive business insights, and make better decisions. Kaarthik Sivashanmugam is a lead software engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. Kaarthik joined the team during SQL Server 2005 launch and has been involved in several feature improvements to SSIS since then. Rakesh Parida is a software development engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. He has worked on SSIS since SQL Server 2005, and was involved in many of the new features in this release, particularly ETL frameworks, data warehousing, and SSIS based solutions. Matt Masson is a senior software development engineer on the SQL Server Integration Services team. Matt joined the team shortly after the SQL Server 2005 release, and has worked on many aspects of the product. ... is my measured response to the reviews entitled "Full coverage of the subject matter" and "A great reference book on SSIS 2012". It is also my warning to those considering this book as an SSIS learning aid.

You have to wonder what's going on if the book gets around to building its first SSIS package in Chapter 7: if it were a book for beginners, Chapter 2 or 3 would be a more appropriate place, and if it were a book for intermediate or advanced SSIS users, this introductory material would not be needed at all. The beginner who persevered through Chapters 1-6, learning about the upgrade procedure and the new features of the 2012 release (revised syntax of XML-format SSIS package files, anyone?), gets to load a text file into a database - and then, without a single transformation explained, is asked to implement parent-child packages, and execute them with T-SQL (!) and C# (!!). With this, core SSIS training is over, and the book moves on to more advanced or niche topics like CDC, "fuzzy" transformations and DQS, administration and performance.

It is only those more advanced topics, found in Part III, which can make this book worth a look. (The upgrade-and-new-features stuff of Chapters 3-5 can be found online). Although I did consider hiring an assassin to go after the author of Chapter 10 - when talking about SSIS 2012, it is very important to be clear about the differences between package deployment model and project deployment model, and that chapter fails this test like there's no tomorrow - the problem is not really with the individual chapters, but with lopsided, incomplete nature of their sum.

Quick guide to SQL 2012 IS New features

As an Intermediate developer in SQL 2005 SSIS, I found this book useful to learn all new features in 2012. However I did not have a test environment to execute the flow. I was mostly interested to learn CDC changes and Configuration changes, which were explained well. The XML file import was explained in simple terms. Enjoyed reading this book and need to dive deep-in to understand in more detail.I would definitely recommend this book as all in one package. it starts from basis and covers all the components in SSIS.

A great reference book on SSIS 2012

It is a great book for intermediate to advanced developers in SQL Server in general or SSIS in particular. Especially I was impressed with the Chapter 3 : Upgrading to SSIS 2012 and Chapter 5: Team Development. It is always helpful to develop SSIS packages in a seamless source control environment like other SQL objects such as stored procedures, DDLs. Data cleansing chapter could have been better with little in depth explanation. However, the book is a very good reference guide for SSIS development especially if you want to know the new features of SSIS in SQL 2012, CDC, configuration, SSIS Security.
A great book indeed.

Very disappointing!

Yes, you will enjoy this book IF you didn't have her other books. It is just previous projects from other books she has already published all put into this 'new' book. So having her other books, I was VERY disappointed to see it was the same information that was already out. I returned the book.
