About the Author
George Pinchuk obtained his M.D. from Kyiv Medical University, and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Medical Genetics of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the (former) USSR. In the latter institution, he worked in the Laboratory of Immunogenetics directed by Prof. L.A. Pevnitsky, who is a renowned immunologist and specialist in the mechanisms of immune tolerance. He has taught Immunology at Seattle Pacific University, and at the University of Washington. Having been appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences of Mississippi State University, he continues to do research in immunology and to teach this subject to 60 to 70 students each semester.

Excellent as Always, Schaum's Outlines.

Schaum's not only gives bold faced vocabulary words, but they excel at orienting the content to the field, so they give a top down view and place the content within that view. Questions and Answers are given, all are in discussion format, a little off putting if you are new to the material, would have liked a few matching and fill in the blanks also but then I am new to the field of Immunology.

Cross referencing material to other texts appears to show content fairly current.

Challenging the Sky Gods

In the Axial Iron Age (starting around 600 bce), key individuals-the Greek philosophers, the Hebrew prophets, the Buddha, and Confucius-planted seeds that would grow to become Western civilization and classical civilizations of India and China. The origin of most of the core characteristics of civilization as we know it can be traced to developments in this period. Clearly, something important occurred then-some event or events that began a snowballing process of technological invention, social complexification, and the abstraction of human thought patterns-that has continued to this day. Thus, if we want to understand ourselves and our world, it is essential that we give attention to the events that occurred about 2500 years ago.
A new book offers some of the clearest and most refreshing insight into this set of questions than any to date. From Earth Spirits to Sky Gods deserves careful reading by a broad audience. Lerro has read widely and has brought together the very best evidence and thinking on this subject. His book is a grand synthesis that, by illuminating a distant historical epoch, also throws light on the present.
This work has the virtue of stating the author's perspective clearly at the outset. Lerro rejects both the ideology of progress (which holds that cultural change in the direction of increased complexity comes about because of some inherent evolutionary urge within human beings, or because of their efforts to improve their condition) and that of degeneration (which regards the development of civilization as a disaster resulting from greed or other moral lapses). Instead, he embraces the idea of improvised evolution, which holds that social trends are usually neither inevitable nor intended, but are simply responses to necessity-people doing what they must in order to deal with problems like population pressure and resource depletion.
Lerro identifies ten trends in social systems from Paleolithic bands to Iron Age States-
1) Increase in population 2) Increase in size of societies 3) Increase in variety of specialized goods 4) More advanced technology 5) Increase in social complexity 6) Increase in permanent home settlements 7) Increase in control over the biophysical environment 8) Growth in the specialized skills of labor 9) Increase in the proportion of work compared to leisure time for the average person 10) Increase in social differences in material wealth: ownership of property, tools, and people
-and argues that these are "for the most part, the improvised outcomes of history."
Lerro is seeking to describe not just transformations of material culture, but mutations in human thought patterns and religious perspectives as well, and to show how changes in the infrastructure, structure, and superstructure of a society are all bound together.
In the first chapters, Lerro lays the groundwork by describing the differences between magic (the sacred systems common to hunter-gatherer and simple horticultural societies) and religion (which appears in agricultural states): whereas everyone in magical societies sees myths as literally true, the upper classes in religious societies see them as metaphors; in magical traditions, techniques for contacting the sacred dimension emphasize sensory saturation, whereas for upper classes in religious societies sensory austerity is emphasized; sacred experience for magical societies is experiential and practical, while for religious societies it is intellectual (for upper classes) and devotional (for lower classes); for magical groups, transmission of the tradition is oral, while for religions it is by means of written scriptures.
The author then turns to the evolution of politics and economics-discussing stratification, surplus expropriation, and markets-to show how the appearance of the first religions was tied to prior transformations in economy and social structure. In a remarkable chapter titled "Places, Spaces, and Sensuality: Physical Locale and Sense Ratios in the Ancient World," Lerro notes that people in all societies differentiate "place" (sacralized areas of familiarity where needs for structure, security, and familiarity can be satisfied) from "space" (areas between places, or unexplored zones that are usually regarded as secular and objectivised). Lerro argues that people living in pre-Iron-Age magical societies seem to have valued places over spaces, and the proximate senses (touch, taste, smell, and hearing) over the long-distance sense of sight; meanwhile, people in the Axial Iron-Age religious societies tended to devalue place and valued the eye above the other sense organs. "[S]ocial structures have an impact on the organization of the senses," writes Lerro, since "the type of work people do and how much power they have over their work affect which of the senses they use."
In addition to this change in sense ratios, the shift from Stone-Age to Iron-Age economies also seems to have entailed a mutation in humans' experience of self. "Individuals in all cultures, regardless of the level of social complexity, must build a social self," notes Lerro, and to do so entails mastering skills such as distinguishing the inner world from the outer world, learning language, suppressing biological urges, manipulating tools, learning roles, learning to think abstractly, and learning to decipher the codes -beliefs, morals, values, and customs-of society. "But," he argues, "this does not mean that all social selves are the same." The collectivist self of tribal peoples is more interdependent with society and nature, while the individualist self of people in complex societies is more independent, voluntary, contractual, and instrumental.
Clearly, how people think is affected by their material culture. Thus, ultimately, "it is ecological, demographic, technological, economic, and political conditions that determine which cognitive stage is predominant in a society or whether a stage will appear at all. How people reason is an adaptive response to historical transformations, not primarily a maturational unfolding of an individual."
A final virtue of this book that is worth noting: it contains over forty charts that clearly summarize the ideas the author is conveying.

Somewhat off the beaten path, this time it is the One Minute Manager Himself who is desperately in need. Since we last saw him contentedly setting the organization world right, he has foolishly transformed himself into an overweight, out-of-breath victim of his own success.

Bad One Minute Manager!

This gives him the chance to narrate his own turn-around process, a conversion that I must admit I find rather inspiring.

Along the way one is treated to the usual locked doors when he tries to slip away from responsibility for the situation. This habit of assigning personal responsibility is perhaps one of the keys to the success of this series.

If you need to balance work and life, pick up one of these little books on the cheap.

The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself!

This book was originally published under the title "The One Minute Manager Gets Fit." An even better title would have been "The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself." The entire volume emphasizes the importance of taking of oneself so that effectiveness in all other areas of life will be at a maximum.
There are four components presented here to insure a fit, healthy life: autonomy, connectedness, perspective and tone. Autonomy pertains to getting control of one's personal schedule so that there is enough time for self-care. Connectedness refers to having a strong, interpersonal support network to keep on track with proper fitness, nutrition, etc. Perspective pertains to how well one views his own life. Tone refers to the actual physical condition and health of a person's body, mind and emotions.
This title should be at the top of the list for "One Minute" fans. The format is the same as all the other books in the series and the principles are life-changing. For some persons, this book may even be life-saving!

tantalizing glimpse into part of the mythology for the Sanguine series.

In Blood Brothers, a short story exclusive by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell, journalist Arthur Crane receives an orchid on what he assumes will be the day of his death. Back in the late 60's he was tracking a killer who left an orchid with the person who would be his next victim. Arthur knows who the killer is, his blood brother Christian, and thinks he knows why the killer is coming for him - again.

This short story is a prequel or back story for the latest release, Innocent Blood, by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell that is due our in December. The previous book was Blood Gospel. This series contains the action/adventure that Rollins is known for combined with a supernatural element. It is well written with excellent characterization and a sharp focus, or in other words, a wonderfully tantalizing glimpse into part of the mythology for the Sanguine series.

Another ancient secret society makes mischief

"Blood Brothers" follows the trend of releasing a short story digitally to promote an upcoming series novel, generating buzz and a little extra income for the author and publisher. The story is generally followed by the novel's opening chapter. "Blood Brothers" is part of the Order of the Sanguines series, which began with The Blood Gospel. It promotes the second book in the series, Innocent Blood. Most of the promotional stories I've read have been unexceptional and that's how I would characterize Blood Brothers.

Arthur Crane finds an orchid in his apartment and flashes back to 1968 when, as a reporter in Great Britain who traveled to San Francisco to write about the death of a British folksinger, he saw a poster bearing the picture of Christian, a relative who was almost like a brother as Arthur was growing up. He didn't find Christian that day, but he did learn that the folksinger's killer left an orchid on his body. A pattern soon developed -- the victim receives an orchid in the morning and is killed twelve hours later, another orchid left on the body -- leading Arthur to dub the murderer The Orchid Killer. Arthur knew things weren't going well for him when he found an orchid on his typewriter. The story moves on from there until Arthur returns to the present and his second orchid.

Some aspects of "Blood Brother" are unoriginal, including the inevitable "secret order buried deep within the Catholic Church," and Rollins/Cantrell are not subtle in their character development. Still, the story moves quickly, the setting is described in convincing detail, and action scenes are more plausible than is common in thrillers (at least if you discount the fang-like teeth that both good guys and bad guys are sporting). I liked "Blood Brothers" enough to give it a weak four stars but not enough to convince me that the world needs another series of books about an ancient secret society.

This short story has whetted my appetite and now has me on pins and needles waiting to read the REST of the story!

Truly enjoyed this back story to Christian who will feature prominently in the upcoming 'Innocent Blood: The Order of the Sanguines Series' novel. A young man who is torn between being a killer or one who does good for mankind. The classic good boy versus bad boy scenario!

Eric Lax is dead-on right. Author Tom Reilly, who has worked on more than 40 films as an assistant director and associate producer, has given film students and those of us who just love to watch films an invaluable guide as to how a film ends up on a screen. Just read the titles of some of his chapters:
1. Learn the vocabulary of film. 2. Learn the language of the set. 3. Pick your ten best shots. 20. Face the realties of the budget. Even fifty million won't seem like enough. 37. Assume nothing. 41. The set has chemistry: Big egos...Big money....Big art. 45. Sweat the small stuff--routinely. and the last chapter 50. Always have a nice lunch.(Ya gotta read this chapter alone several times if you're "in the biz" or plan to be!) The chapters are all fast-paced and bring us right on the set with Tom. His spot on behind-the-camera descriptions of film industry folks just sweeps you along into his world.

This should be a must read for all film school students. It is one of the few film books I've read that really brings the day-to-day details of making a picture (egos and union issues included!)to one's brain cells. The individual experiences really impart mental picture lessons that a student will never forget.

I originally bought it for my daughter who is in film school, but I'm keeping it for my own 'film-buff' library and buying another copy for her, my budding film-industry-worker-to-be!

Great, Practical Tips From a Pro

For those of you currently making films or planning to make them soon, this book is a VERY helpful list of pointers on how to approach the topics of filmmaking. Some tips tend to apply more toward million-dollar pictures, but almost all of the information in here can be applied to a low or no-budget film when you scale down the message. I've read too many filmmaking books to count and sometimes you feel you've read just about all there is to say. In this case, listening to a professional who isn't a major, known director gives a much different and valuable approach to filmmaking that you wouldn't normally get from a book written by your favorite director. Some books talk about how to get the great shots and cast the right mood but this book forces you to ask yourself how much will the shot really cost and can I do it a better way with a small budget. Sometimes, that's just as important.

A Good Choice!

Well, the book is very good,
but I believe that the first 55 pages Chapters 1 and 2 are useless for a beginner because it does not teach C, ASM, or Python - (for these skills I recommend the books The Art of Assembly Language, Python Cookbook, Third edition and Black Hat Python: Python Programming for Hackers and Pentesters - excellent), the chapters 1 and 2 give a very basic explanation of languages, these pages are also useless for an experienced User seeking challenges and new, the exercises of laboratory listed in the appendix of the book, are now available in the mcgraw professional download site.

The other 500 pages of the book are a wonderful contribution of the authors to us hobbyists, professionals, curious and hackers.

The cover is nice and well finished, has colors and a varnish that leaves very beautiful, the pages are excellent for reading and handling, have about 90% opacity, are White and firm, I believe the weight is between 65g to 70g.

Excellent overview of how an ethical hacker should proceed with his/her work. Clear, detailed explanation of how to proceed through many stages of hacking and how far the gray hat hacker should go in order to fulfill his/her statement of work. A proactive approach to finding weaknesses in systems is well-explained, in combination with suggestions for the company to proceed to find those errors. Other books on malware are excellent as well, but are more reactive in their approach.

The purpose of this book is to present computationally efficient algorithms for calculating the dynamics of robot mechanisms represented as systems of rigid bodies. The efficiency is achieved by the use of recursive formulations of the equations of motion, i.e. formulations in which the equations of motion are expressed implicitly in terms of recurrence relations between the quantities describing the system. The use of recursive formulations in dynamics is fairly new, 50 the principles of their operation and reasons for their efficiency are explained. Three main algorithms are described: the recursIve Newton-Euler formulation for inverse dynamics (the calculation of the forces given the accelerations), and the composite-rigid-body and articulated-body methods for forward dynamics (the calculation of the accelerations given the forces). These algorithms are initially described in terms of an un-branched, open� loop kinematic chain -- a typical serial robot mechanism. This is done to keep the descriptions of the algorithms simple, and is in line with descriptions appearing in the literature. Once the basic algorithms have been introduced, the restrictions on the mechanism are lifted and the algorithms are extended to cope with kinematic trees and loops, and general constraints at the joints. The problem of simulating the effect of contact between a robot and its environment is also considered. Some consideration is given to the details and practical problems of implementing these algori?hms on a computer.

Rigid Body Dynamics Algorithms presents the subject of computational rigid-body dynamics through the medium of spatial 6D vector notation. It explains how to model a rigid-body system and how to analyze it, and it presents the most comprehensive collection of the best rigid-body dynamics algorithms to be found in a single source. The use of spatial vector notation greatly reduces the volume of algebra which allows systems to be described using fewer equations and fewer quantities. It also allows problems to be solved in fewer steps, and solutions to be expressed more succinctly. In addition algorithms are explained simply and clearly, and are expressed in a compact form. The use of spatial vector notation facilitates the implementation of dynamics algorithms on a computer: shorter, simpler code that is easier to write, understand and debug, with no loss of efficiency.

The simplicity of Featherstone's algebra blew my mind. Recommended for those interested in robot control.

This book begins by introducing an algebra for forces and motions which greatly simplifies discussion of dynamics. It proceeds to comprehensively review algorithms for calculating rigid body dynamics with effective and easy to understand mathematics and pseudo-code. The book improves on Featherstone's previous work in its algebra, and its addressing of closed loop systems. As a graduate student and robotics researcher I highly recommend this book for those interested in control and simulation design.

Innovative but rather poorly presented

I'm a third year undergraduate mechanical engineering student and I bought this book as my supervisor sugested that I try to implement the concept of 6D spatial vectors into my research project. The book starts out fine, the ideas are sound but I'm having a rather hard time trying to make sense of it due to there being very little use of practical examples in the book and the examples that are in the book are not that well explained; I suspect engineering mathematics students might be able to benefit more from the book but as a mechanical student I find that I'm going to need a lot of assistance to understand the presented material.
