From Publishers Weekly
In light of environmentalist Foreman's arrest in 1989 in Tucson, Ariz., on sabotage-conspiracy charges and impending trial, the title seems enticing. But these 19 urgent essays aren't exactly "confessions." Foreman, co-founder of the militant Earth First! movement, discusses his legal problems only to the extent of claiming he was framed. His aim here is, instead, to lecture on the importance of preserving and rehabilitating a disappearing wilderness. Earth is in crisis, stresses Foreman, and human hands must be restrained from mistreating the wilderness. Grizzlies and redwoods, in Foreman's realm, deserve at least as much status as humans. The author, who long ago lost faith in government protection of wilderness, seeks to restore passion to environmental groups and spur individuals to acts of civil disobedience when needed. Much of the book is familiar material but, with expected trial publicity, Foreman's important message should reach new ears.

From Library Journal
Foreman, founder of the controversial environmental group EarthFirst! and coeditor with Bill Haywood of Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching (EarthFirst!, 1985), here reflects on his involvement with EarthFirst! and why he left the group last year. He also discusses his environmental philosophy and outlines a plan to change the National Wilderness Preservation System. While believing passionately in the idea that the Earth, not humanity, is the most important reason for conservation, he offers reassessments of some of the group's more notorious methods. This is environmental philosophy at its finest and should be read by everyone who cares about the future of the planet. Although it will be considered controversial by some, it is an excellent purchase for libraries providing balanced viewpoints on the conservation movement.

"I am a reluctant radical"
By R S Cobblestone
Confessions Of An Eco-Warrior is not a charming book. It's not full of Abbey-esque witticisms, or Quammen-esque insights into the nature world. It is a frank commentary by Earth First! cofounder Dave Foreman of his evolution, why he believes the Earth needs protection, and why he endorses a hands-on approach to protecting it. Is he perfect? "...I am no saint," Foreman writes (p. viii). "Passion and vision are essential, but without ACTION (in italics) they are empty" (p. 8). Action is the key to environmental protection, he claims. "And when we are inspired, we ACT" (p. 21). "We are the wilderness defending itself" (p. 50).

In this book, of particular interest are Foreman's discussion of the major ways wilderness is being destroyed, his principles of monkeywrenching (and his analysis of arguments against it... check out the chapter on tree-spiking), and "strategic monkeywrenching."

Is Foreman's way the only way? Foreman argues, no. "We need more diversity, not less, in the effort to protect three and a half million years of evolution from plundering by our international industrial growth society" (p. 173). "The deadliest trait of the True Believer, though, is a loss of tolerance for other approaches, for anyone whose ideas are not 'politically correct'" (p. 171).

Today? "...I am no longer part of the Earth First! movement. I no longer represent it and I am no longer represented by it" (p. 219). Sounds like lawyer-speak.

Confessions of an Eco-Warrior
By Cwn_Annwn
Before they were taken over by politically correct left coast weenies Foremans Earth First! was a very cool thing. They were "redneck hippies" who had a love for American wilderness and took radical steps to conserve it. Written after the FBI's attempt to set him up on bogus charges and after he left EF! Foreman lays out his ideas on conservation/ecology and his reflections on his life and times in the environmental movement. There is an emphasis on the wilderness in the western United States with Foreman but thats to be expected considering thats where he's from. Excellent auto-biography from an admirable man who has a lot of interesting ideas.

Confusions of an Eco-Warrior
By Joshua Christofferson
"A monkeywrench thrown into the gears of the machine may not stop it. But it might delay it, make it cost more. And is feels good to put it there."(Foreman, 23) - Dave Foreman

Author Dave Foreman is the cofounder of Earth First! and self-realized eco-warrior. Published in 1991, Foreman says the main purpose of his book is to motivate potential activists into action. His book lays out his reasoning for engaging in what he calls conservation. He portrays himself as a very mild-mannered, caring, and rational person, and not the radical eco-terrorist I was envisioning. But that should not deter the reader from the underlying message he is selling: humanity is secondary to air, water, land, and animals. And destruction of private property (sometimes risking the lives of humans) is the only means available to accomplish the preservation of Earth. While he lays out some very sound reasons as to why the environment (Earth) is under attack and needs human attention, his methods of execution harm the broader conservancy movement, make little impact on large-scale environmental destruction, and can be dangerous to innocent bystanders.

Of course, Foreman acknowledges that his methods are radical and fall outside of mainstream conservancy. He claims that larger organizations such as the Sierra Club have lost their vision and have become entangled in the bureaucracy of Washington. Foreman says that these mainstream environmental groups achieve nothing through lobbying and other bureaucratic modes. Foreman calls for direct action by motivated individuals to literally throw a monkeywrench into the gears of the machine. Foreman doesn't go into too much detail about how to do this, but makes it clear that disabling bulldozers or spiking trees are the only methods Earth-destroyers respond to (in tree-spiking, long metal nails are driven into trees. When loggers cut them down and send them to the mills, the saw blades are shattered by the spike therefore causing hundred or thousands of dollars in damage. Foreman addresses a specific instance where a saw blade was shattered and pieces of it flew into the faces of the workers. Foreman has the audacity to suggest that the tree-spikers were not to blame. The saw, he says shattered because it was old. A newer blade would've only been dismantled and rendered useless. This disregard for human safety is the core flaw of Foreman's logic. While he reluctantly condemns the use of tree-spiking, it grudgingly takes him awhile to come to that conclusion. Any sane person would see that these actions are destined to harm humans on multiple levels).

Earth First! Principals (quoted directly from the book. This "logic" pretty much says it all):

- A placing of Earth first in all decisions, even ahead of human welfare if necessary.

- A refusal to use human beings as the measure by which to value others.

- An enthusiastic embracing of the philosophy of Deep Ecology or biocentrism.

- A realization that wilderness is the real world.

- A recognition that there are far too many human beings on Earth.

- A deep questioning of, and even an antipathy to, "progress" and "technology."

- A refusal to accept rationality as the only way of thinking.

- A lack of desire to gain credibility or "legitimacy" with the gang of thus running human civilization.

- An effort to go beyond the tired, worn-out dogmas of left, right, and middle-of-the-road.

- An unwillingness to set any ethnic, class, or political group of humans on a pedestal and make them immune from questioning.

- A willingness to let our actions set the finer points of our philosophy and a recognition that we must act.

- An acknowledgment that we must change our personal life-styles to make them more harmonious with natural diversity.

- A commitment to maintaining a sense of humor, and a joy in living.

- An awareness that we are animals.

- An acceptance of monkeywrenching as a legitimate tool for the preservation of natural diversity.

- And finally: Earth First! Is a warrior society. "In addition to our absolute commitment to and love for this living planet, we are characterized by our willingness to defend Earth's abundance and diversity of life, even if that defense requires sacrifices of comfort, freedom, safety, or, ultimately, our lives. A warrior recognizes that her life is not the most important thing in her life. A warrior recognizes that there is a greater reality outside her life that must be defended. For us in Earth First!, that reality is Earth, the evolutionary process, the millions of other species with which we share this bright sphere in the void of space." (Foreman, 26-35)

MONKEYWRENCHING

"It is time for women and men, individually and in small groups, to act heroically in defense of the wild, to put a monkeywrench into the gears of the machine that is destroying natural diversity. Though illegal, this strategic monkeywrenching can be safe, easy, fun, and-most important-effective in stopping timber cutting, road building.............." (Foreman, 113)

I find this aspect of eco-terrorism (ecotage or monkeywrenching as Foreman calls it) the most disturbing. He claims that since moderate, bureaucratic environmentalist groups such as the Sierra Club do nothing in the fight against the Earth-destroying forces, it is therefore up to subversive individuals to take matters into their own hands to stop the machinery of destruction. This, he states, is accomplished through the dismantling and destruction of these mechanisms one by one (spiking trees, rendering bulldozers useless, etc). Foreman claims that monkeywrenchers are acting under the same principles as the Boston Tea Party, Gandhi, the French Resistance, and even Martin Luther King Jr. He claims that in desperate times, laws must be subverted and broken in order to bring about a higher justice. I can agree with the logic that revolution over a corrupt system may be necessary from time to time, but he misses the key ingredient in his historical examples: unity. The American Revolutionaries, Gandhi's non-violence, the anti-Nazi movement, and the civil rights movement all had mass support behind them and were united in a specific cause. Eco-defenders are disjointed, have varying degrees of motivation, and all have different ideas of how environmental concerns should be addressed.

Foreman's assessment, however, is that organized resistance has been tried and doesn't work (he defeats his own logic here. By citing examples of historical, organized resistance, he fails to see that he is actually advocating the opposite: disjointed, random resistance). While Foreman condemns tree-spiking (extremely reluctantly, and with a slight wink-wink as if to say `I have to say that for legal reasons, but go ahead anyway') he fails to realize the uncontrollable juggernaut he's unleashed. Using the theory of virtually unbridled ecotage, eco-warriors have started to use arson as their method of choice. The infamous Hummer dealership that was torched, the fires of Southern California are said to be linked to eco-terrorism, and the burning of housing developments in Arizona have all been very close to harming innocent bystanders. Of course the eco-defender would say that the fact that no humans were hurt is evidence that their actions are just. But as anyone can plainly see (except Foreman), the practice of ecotage is only a few steps away from murder. Somewhere, somehow, somebody is going to be trapped in one of these fires and wind up dead. While Foreman may be able to shape his precise vision of minimally-destructive ecotage, he fails to realize that his approval of reckless youth engaging in unsupervised destruction of property is a recipe for disaster.

Besides the obvious dangers of ecotage to human life, has the practice of monkeywrenching really produced noticeable results? Sure, there's been lots of press and fear generated, but has a single one of these disjointed efforts stopped the great machine in anyway? Foreman acknowledges that the actions of individuals will only achieve small results. He seems to believe that all of these small steps will somehow add up to a reversal of eco-destruction. It is clear that it hasn't and won't. Hummers still roll off the assembly line, urban sprawl is still imminent, and forests are still harvested despite the efforts of a few flea bites.

Foreman's condemnation and frustration with the bureaucratic environmental groups is understandable. They seems to make a lot of noise, but don't really get much accomplished. After all, my air is still dirty, my water is still polluted, and my food is still laden with who-knows-what. I can understand why he would want to take more drastic matters in hand. While it is true that there is a desperate need to reshape the industries and governments which cause these unprecedented pollutants, doing so with such flawed logic as Foreman's is unproductive. Like the American Revolution or the civil rights movement, eco-defenders' only recourse will be unity in cause and action; a cause and action that puts humans on the same level as Earth and its other inhabitants, not as secondary citizens prone to harm.

If you're interested in this book, it's probably because your professor assigned it to you. In that case, you're lucky. This reads easily and has constant review so you learn the key terms without much extra thought. I rented this from amazon and had a great experience with payment and shipping, unlike some other companies I've borrowed from.

DO NOT BUY THIS
By just my 2 cents
This "course" is a joke! The book doesn't fit to the size of an e-reader like a kindle or ipad (I've tried both) and it's so muddled with garbage no one could ever use it's a huge waste of money!

Incredibly Empowering--Insightful--and Just What Tender Codependent Hearts Need
By Lisa A. Romano
I am the adult child of two adult children of alcoholics. When my marriage fell apart and I went into therapy, I was baffled when the therapist said, "No Lisa, you're not crazy, but you are severely codependent."

Because my parents didn't drink, I was confused by my therapist's diagnosis.

And then I read books like Codependent No More and eventually stumbled upon this blue book.

I attended my first codependents group--shy--intimidated--and unsure as to what I might find. I had been bullied my entire life by my adult child of an alcoholic mother. I thought her obsessive need to control every thing I did, including how often I changed my underwear when I was a little girl--was the result of a flaw in me. Her inability to trust me--or to be nurturing towards me--made me feel like I was ill--bad--flawed--broken--and never enough.

I was well into my thirties, depressed, the mother of three small children and in the throws of a excruciating divorce before I began to understand how lost I was inside of my own being.

What I learned to understand was, that codependency isn't like cancer. You can't look at it on a cat scan and say "There it is--now let's go operate and take it out,"

Codependency is us...it is the way we have been programmed by our caretakers--to disown self--to loathe self--to question self--to worry more about others than we do ourselves.

I have turned many of my coaching clients onto this book because I believe so strongly in the enlightening as well as empowering messages about codependency and ultimately--life--that it has to offer.

This book is full of personal stories of triumph and human courage. It will inspire you, and even make you cry. It will warm your heart, as it opens your mind...And if you are willing--it will heal your soul too...

Namaste...

A tried and true essential recovery tool
By knitter4years
A must for people in recovery. Adult Child and codependence are the core issues of all other compulsive/addictive behaviors. This book contains the wisdom of many who have walked out of the unmaneagability of our old ways of interacting with ourselves and others. It's a relief to learn we didn't do this to ourselves, and we aren't born this day.

Recovery is a beautiful word. When a recovery expedition is done in the world, it is to retrieve something of great value. Sunk ships, buried treasures, lost people. Twelve step recovery takes us back to find our authentic selves, retrieve our abandoned parts, heal, and learn the skills we didn't develop in our formative years. This book was critical to my recovery, and I will return to it year after year, because codependence is a deeply rooted compulsive disease. I never want to go back to the pain of hitting bottom again. So I work it like I'm worth it.

An uplifting study of the scientific evidence for the afterlife from an experienced anesthesiologist/intensive care physician

• Details meticulously recorded and hospital-verified cases of near-death experiences

• Cites scientific research on NDEs to refute the standard objections of doubters and materialists point by point

• Explores out-of-body experiences, sessions with mediums, electronic communication with the deceased, and other signs from the afterlife

Over the course of his 25-year career as an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician, Jean Jacques Charbonier, M.D., gathered hundreds of accounts of patients who returned from clinical death. Across all of these accounts--from patients with vastly different backgrounds--Dr. Charbonier found striking similarities as well as indisputable proof that these experiences were more than hallucinations. He surveyed other physicians, nurses, and professional caregivers and discovered that their patients described the same experiences as well as exhibited the same positive life transformations afterward. Igniting a scientific quest to learn more, he collected more accounts of near-death experiences as well as out-of-body experiences, attended dozens of sessions with mediums, experimented successfully with electronic communication with the deceased (EVP), interviewed hundreds of people who have cared for the dying, and gathered countless inexplicable stories of “signs” from the afterlife. With each experience he studied, he found himself more firmly believing in the survival of consciousness beyond death.

Dr. Charbonier distills his findings into 7 reasons to believe in the afterlife, beginning with the more than 60 million people worldwide who have reported a transcendent afterlife experience. He refutes the standard objections of doubters and materialists point by point, citing scientific research on NDEs and the work of pioneers in the field of consciousness studies such as Raymond Moody and Pim van Lommel.

Drawing on meticulously recorded and hospital-verified cases, Dr. Charbonier explains that we should not fear death for ourselves or our loved ones. By releasing our fear of death, we can properly prepare for “the final journey.” As those who have returned from death reveal, death is simply a transition and its lessons enable us to live more fully, peacefully, and happily in the now.

Review
“Dr. Charbonier teaches us that the brain is the link between the soul and the physical body and that it represents a set of structures optimized to create, record, and/or change patterns. When your brain dies your consciousness continues. Death is a transition to another life not an end in itself. When you are‘supposedly’ dead; you are more alive than before!” (The Rev. Karen E. Herrick, Ph.D., president of the Academy of Spirituality and Consciousness Studies)

“7 Reasons to Believe in the Afterlife presents seven perfect reasons to believe and to know that you are more than your body. Charbonier’s book should be compulsory reading for every poor skeptic who still believes that he disappears when his brain stops.” (Ervin Laszlo, author of The Immortal Mind and Science and the Akashic Field)

“This wonderful book provides detailed accounts of a wide variety of diverse phenomena that all point in one direction--toward the survival of the mind, with its personality and memories intact, after the change called death.” (Chris Carter, author of Science and the Afterlife Experience)

“As a researcher in the field of near-death studies since 1978, I can say without hesitation that 7 Reasons to Believe in the Afterlife is exceptional. There is nothing else in the field quite like it.” (P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., author of 11 books on her research findings, including Near-Death Experien)

“At last, summary of NDE research and phenomena from someone on the front line of life and death, an intensive care physician. This book is fascinating and scientifically sound while also being easy to read, personable, and humorous. It should become a classic.” (Manjir Samanta-Laughton, M.D., award-winning international speaker and author of Punk Science and Th)

The 2nd Good Reason
A Case That Is Hard to Argue Against

Pamela Reynold’s clinical death was medically induced by a surgical team whose goal was to remove a large aneurism lodged in her brain stem.

Dr. Robert Spetzier hesitated a long time before undertaking this operation. The risks were enormous, and yet, if he had not proceeded with this intervention, the woman was likely to suffer an early death. Her vascular tumor was like a veritable time bomb that, as it enlarged, could explode at any moment.

It is worth going into detail about the preparations for Pamela’s operation to illustrate the extent to which her brain was inactive at the moment when the vascular malformation was being removed. Hypothermic circulatory arrest is a technique used in extremely serious cases and only rarely, because many patients are unable to withstand such a disruption of blood flow and die before the intervention can be completed. The procedure involves the diversion of all blood flow from the area of the operation--the brain in Pamela’s case--to a circulation outside the patient’s body. The procedure must take place in a state of hypothermia to prevent formation of irreversible brain lesions that ordinarily would form within five minutes of stopping cerebral blood flow.

Having anesthetized Pamela with a strong dose of barbiturates, the team diverted her blood flow outside her body while progressively lowering her temperature to the record level of 15.5°C (60°F). Once the blood flow had been cut off, the patient’s surgical table was tilted steeply to ensure that her brain would no longer contain a single drop of blood. As you might expect, the EEG quickly flatlined and stayed that way for almost an hour. The intervention took place without any major problems. Once the aneurism was removed, there was nothing more to do but wait for Pamela to awaken to determine her neurological state. The first surprise was that Pamela suffered virtually no aftereffect from this artificially induced cerebral death. The second surprise was even more stunning: her state of confirmed clinical death, controlled and remaining incontrovertible, in no way prevented her from observing everything that took place around her during the operation! Even with her brain completely taken offline, she was able to see, to hear, and to understand the smallest details of her surgery--a simply impossible feat if we believe that consciousness is fabricated by the brain.

Here is her astounding account.

I heard a mechanical noise, and it reminded me of a dentist’s drill. Then I just sort of popped out of the top of my head. In this state, I was able to see the situation very clearly. I remember that my doctor had an instrument in his hand that looked like the handle of my electric toothbrush. It had a dent in it, a groove at the top where the tip appeared to go into the handle, but when I saw it, there was no tip. I looked down and saw a box--it reminded me of my father’s box of tools when I was a child. At about the same moment that I saw the instrument, I heard a woman’s voice. I believe it was the voice of my cardiologist. She was saying that my veins and arteries were too small to extract the blood from them, and the surgeon told her to try the other side.

While in a deep coma, Pamela was able to describe the surgical instrument used to operate on her. The same for the metal box of instruments that indeed looked like a toolbox but whose depth meant that it was impossible to see into unless you were well above the level at which the operation was taking place. Moreover, Pam was able to accurately report the conversation between the cardiologist and the surgeon when her blood vessels were too flat to introduce suction tubes into them. And all this while her brain was no longer functioning. That means this patient saw without her eyes, heard without her ears, and understood without her brain! How?

The whole phenomenon is easier to believe if we accept that consciousness is found outside the body when the brain stops functioning.

What the Detractors Say

Pamela’s EEG was flat, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t an unmeasurable residual activity.

False, because you must remember that the patient’s body temperature had been lowered to 60°F, and we know that in such a condition there is no chance of having the slightest biochemical exchange between two neurons. All brain functions are therefore out of the question.

Pamela’s sensation of leaving the body arose from a stimulation of the right temporal lobe induced by a lack of oxygen in relation to the lowering of blood pressure in the cerebral arteries and caused by the anesthetic, the hypothermia, and the draining of blood from the brain.

False, because a stimulation of the right temporal lobe would have been easily detected. We need to remember that the EEG remained totally flat for an hour and specifically during the time when the surgical instruments were taken from their container.

The contents of the surgical tool case could have been seen by Pamela when the operating table was tilted up to reduce cerebral perfusion.

False, because at the time the table was being tilted Pamela was already deeply asleep from the barbiturates and had her eyes closed, with adhesive bandages on her eyelids.

Pamela could have heard the sounds of the tools that reminded her unconsciously of her father’s toolbox and an electric toothbrush. Upon her awakening, her brain could have then put together these images buried in her memory. In the same way she could have heard the conversation of the surgeon and the cardiologist.

False, because the pulseless electrical activity (PEA) measured during Pamela’s operation was just as flat as her EEG. It was therefore impossible for her to perceive even the slightest sound at a cerebral level.

Whatta great book, this one's a great addition to my near death book library. A keeper! Plenty of eyewitness accounts of paranormal things those approaching death see & hear. Wonderful reading, Dr. Charbonier has a real gift for writing--never dry or boring, I totally recommend this one.

An interesting and thought provoking book for anyone who already believes in an afterlife.
By Joseph J. Truncale
I have been an atheist since I first began to question religious dogma and think for myself. As a scientific minded individual the title and subject of this book sparked (7 Reasons to believe in the afterlife: A doctor reviews the case for consciousness after death by Jean Jacques Charbonier, M.D. translated by Jack Cain) my interest. I have always been a truth and fact searcher and since this 144 page softcover book covers a subject that is both controversial and questionable scientifically I just had to read it.

I did find the material very interesting and thought provoking at times. The cases he reports in this volume certainly present a lot of questions of whether or not our consciousness somehow survives when we are dead. This text is organized into seven chapters. The first chapter (The first good reason) the author gives a figure of “Sixty million people" who came back from the dead. The second good reason he presents a case that is hard to argue against. The third good reason is about death’s threshold. The fourth good reason the author explains about “a mind outside the body.” The fifth good reason covers perceptions connected to death. The sixth good reason deals with channeling. The last chapter or reason he explains the signs of the hereafter.

This book is well-written and many of the author’s points sound compelling; nevertheless, there has never been real hard scientific proof that our consciousness actually survives when we die. The fact is this hypothesis of the author just creates more questions than it does answers. I did find the book an interesting read and those who are already believers in an afterlife will no doubt love this book.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Never Trust a Politician: A critical review of politics and politicians).

Well written and researched! I enjoyed reading this very much! I believe in the afterlife anyway, but was interested in reading different arguments and findings. Was not disappointed!

Review

"In this groundbreaking integration of neurology, psychology, and evolutionary biology, Dr. Scaer sheds new light on the dynamics of psychological trauma and provides a way to understand and effectively treat its often misunderstood, intractable effects on the mind and body. This book is a must read for medical and mental-health professionals working with patients struggling with everything from anxiety and PTSD to chronic pain, gastrointestinal distress, and a host of other difficult-to-treat medical disorders."

―Ronald D. Siegel, PsyD, assistant clinical professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and author of The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems

"In The Body Bears the Burden, Dr. Scaer boldly demystifies the profoundly debilitating impact of trauma by forcing new conceptualizations that move treatment toward an integrated biobehavioral approach, emphasizing the adaptive functions of our nervous system as it communicates, often outside awareness, between brain and body."

―Stephen W. Porges, PhD, professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and author of The Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological Foundations of Emotions, Attachment, Communication, and Self-regulation

"Dr. Scaer brings the best of medical science and scholarship to his study of trauma-related disease. He understands the effect of trauma to be its grip on the autonomic nervous system, whichalters blood flow, hormonal secretion, and neurotransmitter balances of the brain. This lasting disturbance underlies the majority of diseases listed in the DSM in addition to a large number of baffling medical conditions. This volume is great for the most up-to-date understanding of trauma."

―Louis Tinnin, MD, coauthor of The Instinctual Trauma Response and Dual Brain Dynamics: A Guide for Trauma Therapy

"A fascinating and informative book that has the potential to greatly expand awareness of pertinent issues when working with trauma."

―Liz Jeffries, Private Practice, Winter 2014

Explains PTSD Like Nothing Else
By B. Naparstek
Here finally is the neurological basis for the weirdly persistent, highly distressing, ever-cycling symptoms of posttraumatic stress. Don't let the medical terminology stop you from reading this book. It's a stunning revelation to see how physiologically based this syndrome really is, rooted as it is in the survival imperative of the freeze response and it's cognitive partner, dissociation. Makes those diagnostic categories which most of us therapists got trained on pretty irrelevant! I leaned heavily on the fabulous info in this book to write my own chapter on the physiology of PTSD. It's a must read for people with PTSD, their family, friends and counselors.

An exceptional eductional and reference work from a skilled neurolgist and trauma expert
By NH Doc 4385
By way of full disclosure, I am a plastic surgeon with an interest in patients troubled by disturbed body image and an addiction to cosmetic surgery. When I first wrote about that topic in my 2009 surgery textbook, I made the case from a few of my own patient studies that childhood trauma was one of the causes of an obsession for plastic surgery and postoperative dissatisfaction, but it was Dr. Scaer's work and that of others in the trauma field (Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Pia Mellody, Pat Ogden, Bernice Andrews, and others) that has subsequently helped me piece together a stronger theory and then provide evidence for it, some of which will be published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in October. Dr. Scaer and I have subsequently traded a few emails and he has encouraged my further research

Dr. Scaer is a physician but not a psychiatrist, which gives him the distinct advantage of being able to review the relevant mental health literature from the standpoint of another specialty. A neurologist with an obvious command of neuroanatomy and physiology and all of the abnormalities that developmental and accidental trauma produce, he can write compellingly to make the case, which I believe most physicians do not appreciate, that trauma is not universally perceived. The response to trauma depends upon its meaning to the victim and his or her sense of helplessness in a perceived life-threatening situation. It's like the lion chasing the antelope--the same physiological reactions are occurring--the pupils are dilated, the muscles are pumping, the adrenaline and cortisol are high--but the meaning to the lion is lunch and to the antelope it is survival.

Dr. Scaer has drawn the same link to whiplash and other disease of traumatic stress, and leads the reader through the relevant physiology, trauma and attunement theory, and the way traumatic reactions manifest themselves in a variety of common diseases. As a hand surgeon for many years, I saw the effects of trauma--dissociation, re-experiencing, and avoidance--displayed in many injured, depressed, and angry patients suffering from what is now called "complex regional pain syndrome" and struggled to treat it. All hand surgeons knew that these patients were "difficult", but even now more of them should read Dr. Scaer's work. "Tormented" would be a more accurate term.

The third edition is significantly improved and elaborated over the second, which itself was exceptional. I have read every word of both. There are new chapters on bonding and attunement. The whole text is more "dense", literature references updated and exhaustive. Yet somehow it is still smooth reading for a relative novice to the field. That is the author's skill.

Dr. Scaer seems aware that not all allopathic physicians will subscribe to his ideas, but in my opinion they should. These patients have lifelong afflictions that they did not cause, and until some compassionate physician recognizes it, too many will be discounted as "crazy." They deserve better, and it is pioneers like Dr. Scaer who will educate all of us.

The body does bear the burden
By Ronald A. Ruden
When a thoughtful individual takes the time to summarize 30 years of experience, I view this as a great gift. When his insights allow us to help in treatment, it is a blessing. His major thesis is that trauma, when it produces a chronic stress disorder, can manifest in peculair physical ways. This is the key insight and Dr. Scaer backs his observations with lots of clinical and research data. No doubt some will find this a rigorous read, but it is well worth the effort. I had the opportunity to try this theory. A teacher in a rough part of town ( I live in NYC) witnessed in his class a fight where a student viciously punched a girl in the head, when the teacher interevened, the next blow was to the back of his head sending him into the chalk board and breaking his glasses. He presented 5 days later with classic post concussion syndrome of impaired memory, inablility to read and other congnitve deficits. Before I read Dr. Scaer's book, I would have have not been able to treat him, for, from a medical point of view, it was all the brain banging aroung in his skull that caused this. However, Dr. Scaer made me think that this was instead a PTSD from having witnessed a vicious attack. I treated him with EFT and remarkably two days later he was normal! (This would have usually taken many weeks). We are all searching for ways to treat PTSD, but at least we can now view some mystifying symptoms in a model for which hopefully soon we will be able to fix. Kudos, Dr. Scaer.
